$250K bail for teacher accused in sex assault

By Rosemary Sobol and Sally Ho, Staff Reporters
Chicago Sun-Times
February 6, 2010

A former Catholic high school teacher was ordered held in lieu of
$250,000 bail Friday for the alleged sexual assault of a female
student.

Police said Wesley Cherniak, 32, attacked the then-16-year-old girl
last year at St. Benedict High School, 3900 N. Leavitt, where he had
been teaching.

The student's parents reported the alleged attack to the assistant
principal on May 13, 2009, according to Archdiocese of Chicago
spokeswoman Susan Burritt.

Cherniak was subsequently suspended from the school, Burritt said.

He was arrested at his home Wednesday in the 3800 block of North
Bernard.
