Toronto - A street was named after legendary actor and filmmaker Raj
Kapoor in the presence of his family in Brampton, Canada. The street
naming ceremony was permitted and promoted by the mayor of Brampton,
Susan Fennell, who unveiled the placard of the street name at the
Rose Theatre in Brampton.
Actor brothers Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor took the lead as the
mayor unveiled the name 'Raj Kapoor Crescent' for a road in the city.
The three brothers thanked the city's people and promised that they
are going to make a film soon under the banner of Raj Kapoor.
"I know it's been quite a long time since we made a film. We haven't
made a film after we made Aa Ab laut Chalein (released in 1999) and
we are planning to make a film soon," Randhir said in the presence of
other family members including Neetu Kapoor and Raj Kapoor's daughter
Reema as well as Krishna Raj Kapoor.
"Kareena and Ranbir would have loved to join us for the street naming
ceremonies, but unfortunately both of them are caught up with their
film shoots," Randhir added.
The town on Toronto's outskirts is already known for its large South
Asian population. It was a rare moment when Krishna Raj Kapoor,
Randhir, Rishi, Rajiv, Reema, Ritu and Neetu came together on stage
and posed for a picture.
"We shall always cherish this moment. We are greatly honoured and
proud that my father has been honoured miles away from India. We
thank you Brampton for this love," Randhir added on behalf of the
brothers.
Toronto, which is currently hosting the International Indian Film
Academy (IIFA) awards will also host a Raj Kapoor retrospective where
15 of his iconic films will be screened. The list includes Aag,
Aawara, Shree 420 and Sangam.
