BRAIN STORMER: NO SHOR OVER SHORGUL FATWA

This past Wednesday, a little-known Islamic outfit,
Khamman Peer Baba Committee, issued a fatwa against actor
Jimmy Shergill for his role in the soon-to-be-released
romantic thriller Shorgul. Also, included in the fatwa
were the film's producers and director. The Committee
believes that the film, which is only loosely based on
the Muzzaffarnagar riots, hurts the sentiments of the
Muslim community.

According to the film-makers, there is already an
unannounced ban on the film particularly in the cities
and towns of Uttar Pradesh, such as Muzaffarnagar,
Kanpur, Ghaziabad and Lukhnow. Film distributors and
cinema-hall owners have refused to show the film fearing
violence, bloodshed and anarchy. . . .
