There is news that Jim Hoberman has been laid off from
the Village Voice. While no one should cheer any loss
of job in this economy, I'm sure Hoberman has his regular
teaching gigs lined up already. In the mean time, one
hopes the Voice will find someone who can rejuvenate
art-house cinema. Hoberman isn't a bad critic but the
new auteurs he has championed (and gotten his minions
and acolytes to champion) in the last decade almost
uniformally fail to get anyone other than a couple thousand
of the echo chamber crowd excited. If you are a National
Football League general manager and you draft busts in
the first round 10 years in a row, you'd better be gone.
Gavin Smith, the editor of "Film Comment," needs to go
too. 11 years ago he took over the magazine in some
kind of bloodless coup. There was no announcement
thanking the previous editor, who gave us so many
memorable issues and articles. While I'm older and less
impressionable, I have a hard time remembering any
great articles in the last decade. The most memorable
writings were probably by Kent Jones and filmmaker
Michael Almereyda, but these are outnumbered 10 to 1
by unreadable crap from the likes of Guy Maddin, who
makes my flesh creep. Smith contributed mightily to
the decline of cinematic culture too. Hope you land
on your feet, but please be gone.
