>From the article:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of
a bill that could lead to the death penalty for persons convicted of
working in the production of pornographic movies.

With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at
the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that
"producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production
are considered corrupter of the world and could be sentenced to
punishment as corrupter of the world."

The term, "corrupter of the world" is taken from the Quran, the
Muslims' holy book, and ranks among the highest on the scale of an
individual's criminal offenses. Under Iran's Islamic Penal Code, it
carries a death penalty.

The "main elements" referred to in the draft include producers,
directors, cameramen and actors involved in making a pornographic
video.

The bill also envisages convictions ranging from one year imprisonment
to a death sentence for the main distributors of the movies and also
producers of Web sites in which the pornographic works appear.

Besides videos, the bill covers all electronic visual material, such
as DVDs and CDs. Other material, such as porn magazines and books, are
already banned under Iranian law.

To become law, the bill requires an approval by the Guardian Council,
a constitutional watchdog in Iran.

As Jay Leno joked about it the other day, "This is really troubling
news for Iran's #1 pornstar: Jihad Jameson." :-)

LOL!

But my guess is that Senator Brownback and Attorney General Gonzales are
working to get a similar law passed in the U.S. Congress!

If you believe that then you just haven't been paying attention to the
hearings that Senator Brownback and his friends have been holding in
Congress trying to get more laws passed outlawing adult erotica. And,
you've not been watching while Attorney General Gonzales has devoted more
Justice Department resources to the prosecution of adults producing,
distributing, and possessing adult erotica than any administration since the
1950's.

If you sit back and do nothing this country will return to the days when you
could be prosecuted for possessing a something no more "obscene" than a
"Playboy" magazine.

If you think that the Justice Department and the FBI aren't spending an
inordinate amount of time and energy looking at adult web sites and movies
I'd suggest that you visit:

http://www.freespeechcoalition.com/

It's also a good place to see what the various states are doing to take away
you right to have "adult" materials available!

The republicans have had the congress for almost 20 years and the Presidency
for almost 10 and I'm still buying porn.

I'm glad that you still can but if the majority of Republicans (and, admittedly some fringe Democrats) have their way you shouldn't be able to and won't be able to for long.  It's because of the work of groups like the FSC and the ACLU that you are still able to.  However, since the Republicans have managed to appoint justices to the Supreme Court  who seem more inclined to agree with the anti-pornography view I'm afraid that it will increase the regulations and prosecutions.

Just as an aside, I recently wrote to the Representative (a Republican) who represents my district in the U.S. Congress to complain about the amount of Justice department resources spent prosecuting adults for possession of adult erotica.  This is part of his reply:
"...
As a father of three young boys, I am concerned with the amount of pornography in our society.  Compared to 20 years, even 10 years, ago, the amount of pornography in our everyday lives has increased.  Once it was only in magazines or videos in "adult" stores.  However, now it is on billboards and Internet popups, where we can't help but see when we are driving down the road or researching something on the Internet.
..."

I really doubt that he's driving down the road in the USA and seeing billboards that I'd consider pornographic but the fact that he thinks what he's seeing is pornographic  scares me.  It's that sort of thinking that will make it all but impossible for you to continue buying porn!

Congressmen always claim to want to get rid of porn but at 10 to 15 billion dollar a year industry I don't think they can. Even when their was an outbreak of aids California state reps were promising to regulate the industry. HMMM I wonder what happened to all those threats? They were bought off like they always do. Now their is news of a Republican Senator winding up on a madams little black book even more hypocrisy from conservatives.

Hi Rick!  I hope that you're right but I'm sure that's the way that most Americans and the liquor and beer industry thought right up until the time the 18TH Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified.  Admittedly, Prohibition didn't make it impossible for every American to get booze but it sure made it next to impossible for most.  I don't want to see the same thing happen with adult erotica in America.

Congressmen may be hypocrites but they respond to pressure--especially organized pressure.  The WTCU and their partners pushed the Congress and the states to ban booze in the early 20TH century.  If we don't fight back the right-wing conservative movement will do the same with the adult erotica in the 21ST century.

Don't bet that the internet will make it impossible for them to stamp out porn.  Just this past week the Justice Department's proposed rules concerning "secondary producers" have shown that they're not backing down in the Attorney General's campaign to regulate to death erotica on the web.
