Simply put, Darren Kaye's Hysteria is an exemplary work of
pornographic genius. At first glance, one might assume that it was
nothing more than a sci-fi fuck flick with far too much
superimposition, inaudible non-diagetic sound, and more Tarantinoesque
power-cuts that would make small children go into convulsions. I
assure, dear reader, that although Hysteria may not be the most
conventional porn film out there, it is the most engaging sci-fi fuck
flick this reviewer has ever come across.
Starring the delicious Monica Mayhem (from such films as Hi Infidelity
and Barefoot Confidential 17) as Maya Ericson, the narrative revolves
around a hostile alien race that is bent on destroying everything in
its path. After disintegrating the remote planet Verus 7, the aliens
decide to make their way to Earth, where their test subject (Monica)
is located. Once on Earth, the aliens use their sonic sex ray to
control Maya, forcing her to become perpetually aroused, thus: she
never stops masturbating! The cinematographer (Fredrick Lumen) uses a
nice mosaic effect that makes Maya jack off like a hopped-up
hummingbird.
The purpose of the alien's scheme is not merely to watch Maya
masturbate, but to have her spread an alien seed that will inevitable
lead to the extinction of mankind. There are two FCC Special
Investigators assigned to keep watch over Maya, interrogating her
reveal the location of the aliens. Through a series of flashbacks, we
see how Maya was initially infected with the sci-fi Spanish fly, and
the close sexual encounters she finds along the way.
I realize that I often speak in superlatives, but Darren Kaye has
created a groundbreaking film that bridges the gap between porno and
European avant-garde. Kaye exhibits a unique vision of the modern
milieu interpreted as an apocalyptic wasteland with the imposing
spectacle of urban life. In what could best be described as porn
post-impressionism, Kaye reveals an abstract representation of the
chaotic landscape that Maya is exposed to through the effects of the
aliens' sonic sex ray gun. As Maya wanders aimlessly through an
oneiric landscape, one cannot deny the stylistic similarities with
Dimitri Kirsanov's Menilmontant, as Hysteria relies on the same
anti-mimetic techniques that founded French Impressionism.
For the benefit of you, dear reader, I will refrain from going into
each sex scene, which can be quite redundant considering that each of
these scenes are magnificently shot, involving hot fuckin' with some
of the tastiest stars in the business.
Due to the effects of the sonic sex ray, Maya has a series of
hallucinations that involve a strange non-sequitur motif of Mexican
wrestlers, advocating a sadistic sex club called "Las Chicas". It is
here that Maya fantasizes about making hot lesbian love to Sharon Wild
and Nancy Lee. Placed in a large overcrowded warehouse, the three
gorgeous girls dyke it out on a boxing ring, while the Mexican
wrestling band scream incoherent mantras at them. First, Monica and
Sharon are allowed to please each other while Nancy Lee is kept back
by one of the Mexican wrestlers, forcing her to watch them without
getting any for herself.
After an extended scene of sweet girl-girl action, one of the faceless
Mexican wrestlers has his way with the sexy Sharon Wild, fucking her
sweet hole until he releases his load on her face. I refuse to tell
you anything further about where the story turns from here. You will
just have to see it for yourself.
Overall, I was very impressed with the film. The way that Kaye
proposes the connection between voyeurism and sadism at the beginning
of the film, where Maya is forced to watch her ex-boyfriend fuck the
sexy Envy was positively brilliant, in addition to some great fuckin'
on Envy's part.
VCA really put together some nice supplementary material for the disc.
In addition to a photo gallery from the film, there is a cast section
which allows you to preview the stars' other works. Monica Mayhem has
her own photo gallery, biography, filmography and chapter selections
from the film. There is also a trailer section with three other VCA
titles, including Devil in Miss Jones 6, and some web links and other
advertisements. All in all, this is a stellar disc with great
video/audio quality. A must-see for Sci-fi porno French Impressionist
Mexican wrestling fans!
