Not much. I can't see Americans being so fearful of the law they're
scared to watch movies on Amazon or Netflix because they think they
might be pirating movies. Americans might be dumb (hey, they voted
for Obama didn't they?!?) but they're not that dumb.

Well, if you follow the links, they actually try to hint that people
are overall made less interested in music. But, yeah, it's not as
definitive -- even as a hypothesis -- as I'd originally thought.

What is even better is piracy AND suing people for ridiculous amounts for
"infringement." Some of the lawsuit amounts are so far beyond what some of
this crap would actually earn are crazy.

It goes without saying that the kind of excessive laws and punishments
described in the article are going to create hostility, fear,
paranoia, etc. and wouldn't be conducive to healthy, legal
consumerism. But here in the US, maybe I'm being overly optimistic,
but we appear to be evolving out of the severity of the piracy
problem. Look at Skyfall. It's been out in Europe for a couple of
weeks. Plenty of time to flood the US market with bad bootleg copies
but instead the success of Skyfall commercially and critically
overseas provided enough positive publicity here that it helped the
opening weekend's box office. Releasing event movies in Europe before
they open here is getting more and more common, along with films
debuting on VOD services before their theatrical release. Meanwhile,
with music, there's Spotify and other streaming services. We've
already tried the hardcore punishment approach the Japanese are rying
and it didn't work.

But, for better or worse, James Bond, and SKYFALL in particular, carry
a hearty association with "the big-screen experience" ...and, I can
easily imagine a pirate traipsing off to the theater while his torrent
is downloading. Whereas, I've noticed that, for smaller films, even I
am increasingly choosing the convenience of Netflix, and delay be
damned.
