Yo Pig, I've started a blog on my movie watching habits (genereally
non-mainstream and mostly Asian) and thought you'd have some
particular interest in it.

Nice. And useful -- I got 2 new queue entries. But now you won't
have time to spend on ramcf slinging the shit... er... chewing the

That was probably a wise choice! I haven't seen Panic High School
(the new one, right?) but it sounds better than what ended up on the
screen for OPPAI VOLLEYBALL.

somewhat related: i did watch CROMARTIE HIGH SCHOOL a while back.
Totally insane and crazed and somewhat non-sensical. I did like it
though!

Have you checked out the Attack Girls' Swim Team Versus the Undead? I
couldn't get through it but it's fun for about 15 minutes. Yes, it was
the new version (not the 8mm) of Panic High School. Nice flick.

Panic High School is a serious flick about a school shooting touched
by a suicide of a student. Made in 1978, it's pretty forward-looking.
It's really a good film. Attack Girls' Swim Team, on the other hand,
is your typical girls in swimsuits or school uniforms against zombies.
Not my cuppa but I'll watch anything once.

Well, I'm the last person ever to sling hubris, but..... any serious
flick sure deserves a better title than 'Panic In High School'. (Of
course, we'll never know who named it, or for whom...) Meanwhile,
(and Jesus H. Christ, again)... *what* on earth could you have seen at
15 minutes that prompted you to cease watching ATTACK GIRLS' SWIM TEAM
VERSUS THE UNDEAD (...given that you could breaststroke through the
title to begin it in the first place)?

What ceased me was that it was going to be what it was. An over-the-
top genre bloodfest with a sense of humor. Too much of one and not
enough of the other to keep me watching. Sometimes I need to take a
break from "serious" films and catch some off-the-wall Asian flicks.
Every once in a while you come up with a real winner like the Thai
film "Chocolate." I have a friend who collects Asian films and I've
seen some brilliant stuff: Treeless Mountain, Blind Shaft, Blind
Mountain, Infernal Affairs, Old Boy, off the top of my head. Then
there's the equivalent of the B-film or drive-in monster flick. They
have their moments even if those moments don't become classics.

With a soul-emperiling frequency, I seek out "organ-grinders"

Yeah, I've seen all of those but the MOUNTAINs. I had the TREELESS

Have you seen the fairly recent Japanese movie AOI TORI (BLUE BIRD)
starring Hiroshi Abe (who seems to be in every other asian movie these
days, including, surprisingly, the thai martial arts movie
CHOCOLATE!).

It's about school violence and bullying and the results thereof. Very
good movie and very well done. I'm preparing a little review of it in
the next couple of days. I really liked it.

I haven't seen any of them. I'll keep an eye out. What I've seen
recently -- other than films like Sonatine or The Yakuza Papers -- is
Fate, On The Run, P, Pistol Opera (hated it), The Maid, Ab-normal
Beauty, A Bittersweet Life and Say Yes. And some other forgettable
Thai horror flicks. Another good "bully" flick is "Bloody Aria."

SONATINE : Excellent, perhaps my favorite Kitano film. KIKUJIRO NO
NATSU and HANA-BI also being really high on the list. A SCENE AT THE
SEA is also quite excellent (and i wonder if Kim Ki-duk found some
inspiratin in this). KIDS RETURN is prety good. i hated DOLLS though
visually it was quite beautiful and TAKESHIS was only so-so. GETTING
ANY? was crazy and i liked it for the parodies (zatoichi, godzilla,
etc). ZATOICHI i actually liked ok, but really wasn't Zatoichi for me
but i did love the Geta sandal tap danceat the end (WTF? but fun!).
And his latest one ACHILLES AND THE TORTOISE was kindof cool, kind of
terrible. Overall, I'm glad i watched it and would recommend seeing
it, but it felt indulgent slightly and really didn't grant much
insight into the heart of the characters. In fact, i felt kind of
dirty at the end since the chars were somewhat unpleasant and remained
so.

I loved A BITTERSWEET LIFE. One fo my absolute faves.

I think I saw FATE but not sure. Is that the Korean pickpocket movie
that takes place partly in Japan?

No. Four gang members knock off a casino and of course they get
betrayed. One goes to prison and when he gets out he tries to go
straight but . . . you know the rest. It ends with the line, "Don't be
mislead, I never pursued happiness." The coolest pickpocket film is
one out of Sri Lanka called "Pickpocket." Guy lifts a wallet, goes to
the beach to take the money and toss the wallet and finds a picture of
his wife. Real low-budget and shot right on the streets.

Daytime Drinking is just OK. No Mercy For The Rude is about a mute
hitman saving up for an operation to restore his speech. What I like
about the Korean crime films is that they can go from generic to
comedic to violent in a moment. Many of them are run-of-the-mill ala
Hollywood crime films of the 1940s. They do have their moments.

I didn't really like MtM1 very much but i laughed quite a bit with
MtM2. The cast is totally different and far superior, imho. The lead
girl in MtM (Kim Jung-eun) is one of my MOST HATED Korean actresses!
There's just something about her that just irritates the hell out of
me. I watched LOVERS IN PARIS and HOW TO KEEP MY LOVE and FOREVER THE
MOMENT with her. Liked some of them ok, but each time, just couldn't
stand her. However, in MtM2, I really love Kim Won-hee and Shin Hyeon-
jun is someone i really liked from GUNS AND TALK.

MtM2 is what MtM1 should have been. I ahven't seen the 3rd one.

I've only seen her in MtM1. I'll try and find some of the stuff you've

Yes. It's the first of his that I've seen. I've got "Real Fiction" on
reserve at the library and a friend might have "Spring Summer, Winter,
Fall." "Breath" is a trip. Not what I was expecting at all.

Spring Summer Fall Winter Spring Again is a great film.
Samaria (Samaritan Girl) is also very good
3 Iron is excellent
Bow is not so good

I really liked Time, Breath, and Dream.

and his earlier stuff is not to my taste at all : Bad Guy, The Isle,
Coast Guard, Address Unknown. It's very raw visually and emotionally
and while somewhat amazing because of that, it's very distasteful in
many ways.

I also kinda liked BEAUTIFUL, produced by Kim Ki-duk, and directed by
a guy who was called "Little Kim Ki-duk" or something.

Of them all, I'd say get Spring Summer... and 3Iron (Binjip). They
are the most uniformly interesting and compelling, imho.

I'm working on the first. Just caught M.A.I.D and it's just as dumb as
a Hollywood comedy. "Once Upon A Time In Seoul" is pretty good. They
should have stayed with the original title "Boys Don't Cry." Nice
little flick.
