'Vanity Fair' is only fair; Witherspoon a standout

By Bill Muller
The Arizona Republic
Sept. 1, 2004

It's hard to find much wrong with Vanity Fair, another
adaptation of the 19th-century novel about the
machinations of British high society, except that it's
just a notch above ordinary.

The movie, which stars Reese Witherspoon as resourceful
pauper Becky Sharp, is not a Merchant Ivory production,
but it might as well be.

Director Mira Nair does little to distinguish her film
from all the others about the English upper crust, in
which Americans can express shock over the outmoded
British deferment to class, or money, when it's
available.

The terrorist mission of Jesus stated in the Christian bible:

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth:
I came not so send peace, but a sword.
"For I am come to set a man at variance against his
father, and the daughter against her mother, and the
daughter in law against her mother in law.
"And a man's foes shall be they of his own
household.

She looked good on Jay Leno last night.
Her mention of her role in a forthcoming
movie about Johnny Cash will help sell
Vanity Fair and her other films.
