LEMON TREE (no spoilers)

territories, has her life and history disrupted when Israel's defense
minister's family moves to a house nearby. LEMON TREE is emotionally
and (I presume) ethnically honest, but that doesn't assure connection
with the Western viewer ...which for me was only partial, even though
I was never bored. Mostly recommended.

I find myself watching more film that makes me uncomfortable from time
to time.
Not slasher flicks for example, but challenging subjects. So, despite
the fact that I recently saw 'House of a 1000 Corpses' (of which i
appreciated it for what it was, but disliked it on the face of
things), not too long ago I revisited 'Leaving Las Vegas' to finally
get through it and more recently 'Rachel Getting Married'.
'the Kite Runner' seems to be very well thought of, maybe not by
everybody, still- it's on the close horizon.

Re "challenging" subjects, I'm not a fan of movies whose forte is to
make me feel bad. Enlightened, okay. But, e.g., one good documentary
about any given death-camp usually suffices.
Btw, although some managed somehow to hate it, I thought RACHEL
GETTING MARRIED was wonderful filmmaking.

'Challenging'? Well, it's a look at cultures many of us know only via
international headlines. And its drama at least rattles the cage of
ordained p.c.-ness. But, no, LEMON TREE isn't a good nightcap to a
blistering war-zone foray...

If you're interested in some more challenging fare, how about Phoebe
in Wonderland (Elle Fanning showing that she may be more talented and
interesting an actress than her more-wellknown sister) or perhaps Blue
Car.
