The pointedly spare drama BALLAST focuses on the trials of a low-
income black family in rural Mississippi following an untimely death.
The movie benefits from unusually good -- and understated --
performances, as well as from a cohesive, compelling storytelling
style that trusts its audience (...even to the point of omitting a
background score). Its authentic-feeling ambience almost makes one
forget this is an art movie (...well, a Sundance movie anyway.)
Recommended.
