Melancholia

I had heard so many depressing things about Melancholia that I didn't
want to watch it, and when I finally got around to viewing it, I did it
as background viewing while I played iPad games. But the movie had some
very compelling scenes that I got drawn right into it. Now I have to
watch it again properly. I wish I had seen it in a theater because it
would have been utterly compelling on a big screen.

Lars Von Trier seems to be some kind of cinematic genius. I've seen his
other movies in theaters and found them irresistible.

EUROPA was a little obscure for me back when I saw it, and I never
quite got the comedy in THE BOSS OF IT ALL. But otherwise his stuff
-- and I've seen nearly all of it -- has always been mustn't-miss, and
often the most deeply felt by a director. If he were to stop making
films, I'd feel a personal loss.

The Element of Crime -- of what I've seen so far -- is my favorite and I've seen a lot of his stuff -- I have Breaking The Waves sitting on a table nearby -- and how do you know how "deeply felt" his films are and is that out of all directors ever? Sometimes I find his films too schematic.

Meanwhile, I know his films are 'deeply felt' because I have -- or at
least need -- faith that I couldn't be so thoroughly fooled. Also,
I've seen THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS...

I watch the guy's films -- and I was underwhelmed by Melancholia -- and other than Elements of Crime -- I haven't really loved any. Europa seemed even faker than a Hitchcock movie and updated in an arty way so that it was attractive in a visual sense and utterly remote, cold and practiced.

I always start out resisting his films and end up being utterly
gripped on an almost silent movie level. Melancholia got to me.
Hell, even The Idiots got to me. I expect the same for the four hour
duration of The Nymphomaniac, even if Shia Labeouf was wrong about the
hardcore porn stuff.

A VHS (?) rental years ago from some artsy video rental store. iirc,
the other movie we rented was Howard Hughes' The Outlaw, making for an
odd double feature.

enthusiast acquaintances. We stood outside the theater and argued for
nearly an hour (...about points of interest, not their absence). Only
afterwards did I learn who Bjork was/is...

Just saw it and loved it. Bjork is really good and the film sucks you in and then slams your face. It may be my favorite Lars von Trier film. Really good stuff.
