Some critics at Rotten Tomatoes argue that the film illustrates his
bipolar disorder very well, but in order to accomplish that, there
would have to be some proof he cared at all about the life that the
other "lover" represents.
Blob, I, and others hammered this one out pretty hard. (I liked it a
lot.)
(That JP 'cared' about both lives *immensely* is a given. He's
bipolar.)

Really great thread! I enjoyed it, all around. Thanks for the URL.

Beg to disagree with you here. If you say that the viewer should
*infer* he cared about his home life, it would have been really cool
to see it. No, I'm afraid this movie doesn't make four stars because
it really is all about Paltrow. Really. In fact, it wasn't until I
read reviews, which I routinely do AFTER seeing a film, that I
realized the title referred to his Jewish girlfriend. I thought the
"two lovers" were Phoenix and Paltrow.
...well, DUH!... (sarcasm aimed at passersby who think there's an
alternative)

Don't discount my epiphany that his 'two lovers' were his manic phase
(Paltrow, romance, and wild abandon) and his depressive one (Jewish
gf, reality, and sedate stability) ...of which the wimmen were merely
a symbolic part.
Yes, yes. That would explain the movie's power *despite* the lack of
any development on the home front with his mother and father, or in
the "relationship" (NOT) with Sondra(?).
This was really an unforgettable film, and I think you hit the nail on
the head about why it should be unforgettable when one entire side of
his life was completely neglected. That other side is inferred
emotionally, at the beginning and at the end.
I did feel, at the big reveal, a bit sick, as if a murder-suicide
might occur that night...or the beginning of the life story of a titan
of the dry-cleaning industry. It was that unclear and that good.
