T.O. wasn't original for drum corps, McConnell wrote it way before BD did it.

Winter is a medly of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Little Drummer Boy---lot's
of other corps have played medlies (Royal Airs and Troopers come to mind) and
none of those were considered original.

Robert Smith also wrote the entire Magic 1996 show - 12 Seconds to the Moon. I
know it was original, but I'm not sure if it was a compilation of previously
listed music.

12 Seconds to the Moon was not on this list as it was not written
specifically for drum corps, but commissioned by the U.S. Air Force and was
premiered by the Air Force I believe in Feb. of 1996. Also left off was
Smith's The Divine Comedy which is an orchestral work.

My Dear Mr. Me,

The various melodies may be interwoven in an "Original" concept, eh.

This be true---great classics come to mind that you wove together like "First
Federal March" and "McDuffy March"!! Two of the all time best.

I was thinking too pieces like the Royal Airs' "What Kind of Fool Goes to Paris
in April" ("What Kind of Fool am I" & "April in Paris.") and Troopers with the
combo of Never My Love/Up Up and Away and the classic Sounds of
Silence/Scarborough Fair!
All great stuff!

Not to mention 27th's Chicago medley of "Does Anyone Know..." and
"Beginnings", one of the few concerts I ever enjoyed, plus my all-time fave,
the Skyliners "Tenement Symphony" and "Down By the Station", as long as we're
talking about combo numbers.

All of the above stray a bit from 'original music', though, as great as they
were.

Dr. Kent M. Scott (early 70's Cavie sop. soloist in "Fiddler")
wrote a few "challenging" originals for the '74-'77 Flying Dutchmen of Quincy,
IL.

1974-75 "???" (referred to as "The Opener")
1976-77 "Fanfare" (another opener)
1975 "The Polka"
1974-76 "The Flying Dutchmen" (the closer, our theme song, it, etc.)

Where the Blackhawk Soars is sold as a grade 3 concert band selection. I don't
know if it was written for corps or band first, however

Don't forget "Rocknormanoff's Fifth" or as every drum corps publication called
it "Name the Opener" written by the great Ken Norman and played by the Kilties
in 1971 and Kilties Sr a few years ago.

I remember the original score to Rocknormanoff's 5th (was a Kiltie in 1970) but never knew where the original song came from. The original title on the score of Ken's arrangement says, "Deep Purple." Anybody have an answer? lan...@gmail.com
