Mr. Benedict, 76, of Davidson, NC, passed away on November 2, 2005 at the Carolinas
Medical Center-Pineville. Larry was born on December 23, 1928 in Binghamton, NY to
the late Lawrence and Louella Walker Benedict. Larry was educated in the Binghamton
School System, and was graduated from North Carolina State University.
Larry was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict, stationed in
Greenland. After honorably serving his nation, Larry was employed for 37 1/2 years at
I.B.M.
Larry was a skilled woodworker and a talented artist. His love of music took him to
church choirs and the I.B.M. Glee Club. He loved the Classics, Opera, and the
Standards, but most of all he loved the Hymns and Martial Music.
Larry had a passion for the water and boats. A highlight of his life was the Tiger
Cruise he took with his grandson from Florida to Norfolk, VA. aboard the USS
Enterprise as his son Reid was returning from a world cruise.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Jacqueline of 31 years. Also surviving are his
seven children from his first marriage, Pennylyn Valles, Terry L. Kelley, L. Reid
Benedict and his wife Kim, Tammy S. Tomanek and her husband Will, Cheryl J. Masters
and her husband Jack, Loring R. Zartler and his wife Terri, and Paul W. Zartler. In
addition, Larry is Survived by 19 Grandchildren, and 9 Great-grandchildren. Larry
also leaves behind five stepchildren from his second marriage, David L. Preston, and
his wife Suzanne, Susan P. Davern and her husband Lawrence, Timothy O. Preston,
Philip J. Preston, and Bridget P. Costner.
Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
While his children were young, Larry was a very active director of a Drum & Bugle
Corps. He loved all the children, and it was a point of pride that he was the first
babysitter for several of them.
