Well, our band has a music arranger, so it wouldn't be the EXACT copy of The
Prince of Egypt music. It will be very close though.

Understood.....but in order to legally arrange it you must get the copyright
approval....unless your circuit(s) does not require it. If not, be
careful....it has not been unheard of for band programs to get sued.

The South Bend Riley Band in Indiana is planning on doing an arrangement of
"Africa Song and Dance"

Last year we combined several Smith and Melillo pieces for our show "The
Storm" It was an awesome show, but there were so many personal conflicts
within the band we didn't reach our full potential.

The year before we did a show with a patriotic theme and before did "Fiddler
on the Roof" this one was the first time we marched in ISSMA competitions
and we recieved a 1 at Regionals!

My freshmen year we did "The Lion King" so you can see how far our band has
come the past few years, and it hopefully will keep moving on.

Even though I am graduating I am still going to be on staff next year so I am
very excited for the show. Sunset High School in Portland, Oregon will be
marching Santa Clara Vanguards show, Copeland the Modernist. I have already
seen the arrangment and it is kicking!! The first song is basically the same
and then we will play the third song and the fourth movement is different then
the original arrangement that SCV did. I will be the bass tech and we are
going on a trip to Hawaii so is will be a ton of fun!
Two years ago we performed Adventures in Time by Stan Kenton and were the best
band in Oregon and Washington. This past year we marched a show called the
Adventure Continues which had music from Stan and Pat Methany. They were major
crowd pleasers. Too bad I am graduating because I would love to march that
Vanguard show!

Wow, y'all let graduates come back the next year to be on staff? That
would present a weird situation, IMHO, with the students. At our school, I
think (we haven't had many past students come work here) there's some 5-year

favorites and bias and stuff. Does your situation seem to work out okay?

Well, I will be the bass tech for Sunset but I doubt since I just graduated
that I will not get payed much, if anything at all. During band camp in the
summer our director always encourages past students to help with anyone who
needs it but mainly the freshman. It is always fun to just hang out and help
set drill. It has been sort of a tradition if you are in town to come and
help. I am just staying longer and being staff since there will be 5 new
people on the bass line.

We let graduates come back. Granted, those who come back are not just random
people who were past members, they were either section leaders or Drum Majors.
Actualy our drill writter who has gotten extremly good in the apst few years
(we got mad crazy visual awards this year, including for the 1st tiem ever best
guard awards and best marhcing -we used to be just a really great sounding MB,
not a great looking now we're both) graduated bout 6 years ago. Inaddition one
of our 2 guard people graduated 4 years ago and has been coming back the past 2
years has really helped our guard wih many things especialy after touring with
a drum corps this past summer. Anyway, we have a bunch of people who throughout
the season come back and help us out during rehearsals, thses people have
helped us out a lot, by being able to work with specific seciotns (generaly
the ones which they had been involved with) to help them improve at lot. We've
never had any problems with graduates as staff, i'm not quite sure why a band
would, unless just random people come back expecting to be staff, when in fact
they weren't great marchers, players, ect while they were part of the band.

Our band did a show last year entitled "Faces of Fire" I absolutley
loved it! It was music by James Barnes...whoever he is. But it was hard
to march to because it was mixed meter in 7/8 and 5/8 time mostly. Some
of my favorite parts were at the beginning and end. We started out with
a guard girl on top of the drum major's podium. She did a dance solo to
the percussion intro but towards the middle of it she started to go down
while our drum major came up on this electronic lift type thing...it was
so awesome and indescribable without seeing it. At the end the guard had
"fire capes." It looked like the field was on fire...well besides
the 20 some walls we had on the field that looked like fire too...:) It
was a lot of fun. The year before they did a show entitled "Vicory at En
Gedi" It was a lot of people's favorite. It was music by Holsinger I
think. This year I think we are also doing music by Holsinger, but I am
not sure. We'll see! I can't wait for it all to start again. Marching
season is one of my favorites!

We're doing a swing show, 4/4 and cut time. Zoot Zoot Riot (VERY VERY loud and
powerful), Salute the Duke, It Don't Mean a Thing (if it Ain't Got That Swing),
Neighborhood Trouble which includes a 28 measure drum break, which is good cuz
I'm on drumline. =) I think it's gonna be ok...we wish we'd gotten better
music like "In the Mood", I'm sure you all know that one. We all wanted that
song so bad!!! =( Oh well, maybe in the stands...

At my highschool, we are prepering to play a show from the new
Starwars-Epsode 1! I think this will be a great show although it is a
bit different from what we put on this year, we started with Sing Sing
Sing eased into Tuxedo Junction, and finished it off with Pennsylvania
65000. It was more of a swing type show. The year before that we played
a tribute to Gershwin. We played parts of "The Symphonic Gershwin",
"Fascinating Rhythm"," An American in Paris", "I Got Rhythm", and
"Rhapsody in Blue". I'm glad I've got a chance to play exciting shows
such as these, and I'm really looking forward to Starwars!!!!!

NOOOOOOOO. i had a bad feeling that someone would d othis as a show. I
have seen so many Star Wars shows done and none of them have done justice to
the greatest movie music of all time. Not to say the show will be bad, but
without strings it just won't be the same. And not to leave out anyone, we
could definitely leave out the chorus. Unless your choir decides to march
with you and they are going to learn sanscrit, well, good luck trying to
meet the hype.

On an American Spiritual in the '93 marching season. I'm
trying to picture Robin Hood as the opener, but having a
hard time since I have the opener we used (Ballet Sacra)
stuck as the opener. :)

BTW, is anyone doing either a) Year of the Dragon by Sparke

did it)

Before you came to Lincolnway, they did Homage to Perotin as the opener,
followed by the Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss. This was very effective, as was
Ballet Sacra, perhaps even more so looking back on it. I think Robin Hood will
work too, we will see. I will hear that band mid-season.

As to"Year of the Dragon," Poteet High School in Mesquite Texas is doing it
this year, as is United Township in East Moline Illinois. I am not aware of
anyone doing Liturgical Dances, but perhaps someone else knows of a band doing
this in th 1999 season.

Understand Lincolnway is doing the Rose Bowl Parade again this year...

With Matt Krempasky as director/arranger, I bet it will be great.

He was lead soprano in a drum corps I was percussion arranger/instructor
of in the mid-70's, the Monarchs from Wayne. Mention to him you want to
play the Monarch's closer, "If You Believe" (Matt had a solo) and "Ease
on Down the Road" from 'The Wiz' next year instead of "Channel One".
Tell him you heard an old drum corps recording of it, and it was great
except for the lousy soprano solo. :-)

Say "Hi!" to Matt from me, if you would.
