That commercial was awesome!!! Loved it. Don't know what band it was... I think
there was a sign some point during the commercial, it was too fast for me to
see what it said tho... May i say once again, that that commercial rules!!!

I have seen the commercial and I think it looks pretty lame. That is the kind
of thing that makes marching band look stupid. Maybe if they were marching
190+ and playing some cooler music, but.......they didn't do that.

The commercial is cool, but the band was kind of "down"... there seemed to
be a lack of excitement... and the backward step was horrible! For the
speed they were going they should have done better than that...

Just me being picky as usual... no offence meant!

Wow i am glad you all liked it, i asked cuz it is my marching band,
Morris Hills High Skool from Rockaway NJ.. We were chosen because of our
"unique" sound with the synth and bass and our championship 97" year
season. And for those of you who thought it was lame well firstly, the
music was arranged by our director over his thanxgiving vacation. we had
three dayz t learn the music and drill. and all the cheesy looking stuff
on the commercial like the way the bass drummer is playin all dumb like,
that was all mtv's idea. and with te shitty head they put on w/ the
decal, it coulda been broke in no time, but ay way, the music was easy,
an we were presed for time but it was fun anyway and now our band is
reconized al over the nation.

i thought the commercial was really cute. it didn't make marching band look
stupid!! at least they decided to put a marching band on a commercial & not
make fun of it. And it's not like they could've marched a full-fledged show.
it was only 30 or so seconds!!! what do you want???

The band that was used was the RCC (Riverside Communtiy College) Marching Band
from Riverside, CA. My best friend plays mello for them (and is in the
commercial). THe people that got "attacked" by the wolves were stunt people -
not actual band members.

I think the only band/music commercial that really bothers me is the one for
the car (the new 3 door camero I believe). The horrible tuba player is painful
to listen to each time it comes on, and it to me is really annoying. The other
commercials I can laugh at, but that one is just painful to be around.

cute, thank you, we did what we could (in 3 days) ....and for those of you who
said it was corny and that you didn't like the music...guess what, it was mtv's
fault that the bass drummer wasn't actually hitting the drum and it was mtv's
fault that they showed the wrong instruments at the wrong times in the music.
all we did was learn a 30 second drill set in days and they took it from there.
but thanks again to those who liked it :) we had fun even though it was pouring

I saw that one last night. I don't know what to think, on one hand I thought
it was funny and permotes marching band. On the other hand, I think it
portrays band in a negative light and the band shouldn't have agreed to do the

I don't really mean to dis the commercial or the band in it, but there is one
scene that drives me nuts. When the camera comes in on the snareline, I noticed
they all are playing matched grip. To me, and to a lot of people I know, that
looks so wrong in marching percussion. Snares should be able to play the center
of their drum without having to pull their arms way back past their shoulders.
My personal opinion is that marching snares should be able to play traditional
grip-because thats exactly what it is-tradition. I personally can't play
traditional; that's because i don't practice it-(I'm a multi-tenor player)

Well, my opinions don't necessarily reflect what other's opinions are, and I
certainly don't speak for everyone, flame me if you want.

Oh boy, heh. Here we go. I can see a future of matched vs. traditional
grip disscussions.

OK here we go.

First of all let me explain the different grips to all of those non
drummers that have no clue what we are talking about

matched grip- Quite simply, matched grip is where you make your left
hand look like your right hand. (hence the name matched)

A pic of me using matched grip is here
http://geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/2351/fugboa.jpg

The matched grip is used by many HS snare line such as Lassiter and Fort
Mill. Several Drum corps even use matched grip such as Les Etoiles and
Academie Musicale. Even SCV used matched grip for several years.

The advantage matched grip has is that it is easier to learn and easier
to clean then traditional grip.

Traditional grip- Traditional grip is harder to explain. If you want to
see what trad grip looks like look at this pic on my personal page.
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Arena/2351/me.html

Trad grip is called traditional because it was used back when snare
drumming began. It was used back in confederate days, back in fife and
drum days in scotland, back in....well you get the point. Believe it or
not but at one time drum harnesses (drum carriers) did not exist. The
drums had to be carried by slings. Because of these slings the drum was
tilted in a direction. It felt akward to play the drums at this tilt in
a match grip so the drummers just moved their hand (left or right
dependeing on which way it slanted) upward into an akward looking
position and this is how the trad grip was born.

Around the 60's (Date may be earlier or later) the harness was created.
At first almost all bands/ Corps switched to matched grip b/c the drums
were now level. Many people felt akward having played trad grip their
whole life and having to switch and many people felt like they had to
keep the trad grip for traditional sake. In other words "my great
grandad played trad grip in the civil war, I just cant give it up
because of some new harness!"

A large number of HS, colleges, and corps use trad grip for the reason
mentioned above. The advantages of trad grip is that: It looks cooler
and it up holds the tradition of using that grip.

OK now my view on the whole deal.

Traditional grip does not take long to learn. It takes as long as it
took you to learn paradidles. All it takes is some serious practice. I
learned it in half a month. In truth learning different grips makes you
more or a percussionist then a drummer.

By far if a line is using matched grip their excuse should not be that
they do not know traditional grip. Thats like saying "We dont know how
to play paradidles". To which i say "Well then learn it!"

A good reason to use matched grip is that your snare line is young and
experienced and the parts just sound way to dirty with trad. For a line
to be clean you must have consistent hands. If your snare line is
inexperienced they may not habe the resorces to keep consistant hands in
a trad grip. It's alot easier with matched.

IMO matched grip should be used as a dead last resort but it does carry
plenty of merit in the marching percussion genre

Will you lay off of them. If you had read the other posts before making the
one you did you would know a few things. First, it was raining so they probobly
weren't all that happy. Second, they only had a week to learn the music and
drill. Third, the bass drummer was told not to play so he wouldn't cover the
MTV decal on the drum. Also think of this, would MTV, with a whole country of
bands to pick from, go pick the worst one they could find? No, they selected a
band they thought was great and could meet the challenge quickly. I have seen
this band preform many times and I know they are a very talented group. Next
time think before you open your big mouth.

Everyone needs to settle down about this whole MTV thing. People on here are
just voicing their comments. STOP freaking out on people. It's stupid!!

I think the poor band in the commercial got stuck doing a lot of Non-marching
stuff because MTV thought it would look good. They fell victim to non-bandos
choosing how they preform. You wouldn't get a bunch of metal heads to plan a
classical concert...same idea. I think it's cool that they got to do the
commercial...they have to have been SOMETHING special to be noticed by MTV...

Just saw the comercial again...and I like it. The guard uni's are too
much..they look cute! I think we need to stop nit picking the comercial now
and just be thankful that Mtv has used the activity to advertise a very big
thing for Mtv. CONGRATS Morris Hill.

Did you guys play Closing Time or something cause that's what it sounded like
on the commercial. Just wondering. It sounded hella cool by the way and I
thought it was a cute commercial and that bass drummer was cute!

Congrats to your band, and Mike Sopko! Hills has had a great band for a
loooong time. I judged them throughout the 80's and Mike always does a great
job with them.

Say Hi! to him for me, when school starts in again.

The commercial keeps coming on tv. You guys look very nice. Stupid mtv,
i'm sure u guys could have done better if given the chance to play the
drum right. you guys kicked ass and the instruments coming down at the
end was bomb! It looks so good when everyone does it together.
Congratulations to all band members and staff!!!

Yeah, I _finally_ saw it... and then saw it three more times in the same
sitting. I haven't been following the thread, so sorry if this has already
been asked, but what are the songs being played? The first one sounds like
the new single from Hole, then Closing Time, but what else?

Oh btw, just a question to any MHHS people out there, do your snare players
always double grip like that, or was that just something MTV wanted?
Curious on how effective that is.
