Also AT&T will be cutting off my Usenet service in a couple of weeks.
Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative service?
And I would prefer to not use Google Groups for this.

Yes News.Individual.net is a service that costs about
$10-$15 per year. Depends on the value of the Euro versus the
dollar. It is run by a university in Germany and has been in
business a long time. When I started not so many years ago
it was still free.
You have to pay thru a separate special systems setup for
processing payments.

Gilles,
A possible solution for consideration, depending on how much AT&T
charges you for your internet connection (I'm presuming that is how you get
the internet), that is to go with Time-Warner for internet, they have cut
off the Usenet access from them directly, but offer a free access through
isp5.newshosting.com, which is how I get here form there. Don't remember if
that has binary Usenet though. And as an author, you may fine there legal
agreement most disagreeable, as they sate words to the effect that they have
right to all your posts and can do anything they want with them without your
permission needed. It's something to mull over I guess.

PS: I'm in Central Florida, don't remember if you've listed your location,
but thought Time-Warner cable was nation wide.

That's where I went; seems to work pretty well. They're free, but don't
carry binaries. There are other free news servers available, but most of
them also don't carry binary newsgroups.
Lists and info about new server providers, both free and commercial:
List and comparisons of some commercial providers:
If you do go wit one of the free news servers, you might consider having an
account with a second server as a backup in case your primary free server
goes down.

I also use news.individual.net, and I believe Dave Baranyi uses that
service as well. They don't carry binaries groups, but their message
retention for the rec.* hierarchy is measured in months. They've become
one of the de facto hubs in the plain-text Usenet system over the years;
their message spool is as close to complete as possible, except that
they filter out the obvious spam.
There's a list of News Service Providers (both pay and free services) at
<http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=faqs:news_providers>; you'll
probably find an acceptable NSP or two from there.

As far as I've noticed, all of the recommendations so far have been for
text-only access. If that's all you need, that's fine - but if you would
like to have binaries access, my usual recommendation is to consider
Giganews.
They have something of a reputation for being expensive, but as far as I
can tell as a customer, it's pretty much entirely undeserved - if
perhaps only because I haven't found anyone else who provide the same
level of service, particularly in terms of article retention time.
I've raved about them often enough in the past that I'm a bit chary of
doing so again, but I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Thanks
Actually text is really all I need, haven't used a binary group in years.
But still good to have the info.
Me too.
news.individual.net is excellent -- it has good newsgroup coverage
(modulo binary groups), is very reliable, and seems almost spam-free.
