Clements, Jonathan
Schoolgirl Milky Crisis: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade
London: Titan Books, 2009
I was jazzed when the Cartoon Art Museum store got this one in. I
spotted a box that the manager had yet to open, and knowing the book was
on the way got her to process the order.
I buy damn near anything Clements publishes, the only thing I don't have
is his book on the Empress Wu.
This is a fat (393 p + index) collection of his essays.
I also walked out of the museum store with:
McCarthy, Helen
500 Essential Anime Movies: The Ultimate Guide
New York: Collins Design, 2008
An excellent book to show folks who are trying to decide what to watch
next.
Richmond, Simon
The Rough Guide to Anime: Japan's finest from Ghibli to Gankutsuo
New York: Rough Guides, 2009
Looks like a good introduction to the industry and has entries on 50
select titles.
I also recommend his Rough Guide to Tokyo, one of the best travel books
on the city available.

There are 500 anime movies? They must be including OAVs.
Is the ToC available on-line anywhere? If not, can you give us examples of
what some of those 500 anime movies are?

(Why do I suspect that Sturgeon's Law applies in spades here?)

You're talking 40 years worth, so including made for tv movies and long
OAVs (like Megazone 23) there's easily that amount.

The structure is by genre with a star rating, five star titles listed
first then the rest. It also includes a recommended age rating.
Not as much as I had hoped, but it does illustrate the structure.
