I was wondering what the most used IF Creator is for writing IF?

I have researched Adrift, Quest, TADS3, INFORM7.. Wondering what you
authors use out there.

This is my first post to the community. glad to be a part..

Thank You

One to figure that out is to look at what was entered into last year's
interactive fiction competition: http://www.ifcomp.org/comp06/

Or, better yet, take a look at Roger Firth's Cloak of Darkness page
at:

http://www.firthworks.com/roger/cloak/

Compare the languages there, and see where you think you'll be most
comfortable with.

That's hardly an indication of which system is used most to create IF,
just which system is used by the comp entrants. A better indication
would be to count up how many games are written with each system.
There were 51 games written with Adrift last year. How many did Inform
(the most popular choice for the IFComp) manage?

From a brief scan of the Archive for Z-code and Glulx games from 2006:
23 from the Competition
3 other Glulx games, excluding new versions of older games
19 other Z-code games, excluding new versions of older games
1 "Spring Thing" entry
6 "Introcomp" entries
3 "MCDream" entries
5 Spanish "retro-comp" entries
12 "Speed-If" entries

That makes 72, though I expect I've missed a few here and there.

You know, I don't usually get involved in these kind of urinating
matches, but I wanted to point out something -- volume does not equal
quality. I have tried to play many Adrift games and abandoned them
within a few minutes because the quality was abysmal. Also, the
prolixity of a few authors do not by themselves make a system more or
less popular.

I've played a lot of bad Inform games as well, but that's neither here
nor there. The question being asked was "which system is used to
create the most IF games", not "which system produces the best games".
On average, Hugo probably produces the best games because it produces
so few but they're generally all of a decent standard. Inform produces
some classics mixed in with some unplayable messes. And yes, Adrift
produces more than its fair share of unplayable messes.

I have to admit, though, I'm surprised at how many Inform games were
written last year outside of the IFComp. Nice to see there are still
people writing games not focused solely on the comp.

Thank you all for your input.. This is greatly appreciated.. I am
looking at Hugo right now. But Inform7 has seemed to gather a lot of
my attention. I tried Quest- I do like its features. Adrift is a
decent program as well. Right now I am in between Hugo, Adrift, Quest,
and Inform7 - which I believe the later will win. Thank You Again..

P.S. Does Inform7 have multimedia functions - add sound, add pictures,
etc. etc.?

It doesn't support sound directly at the moment, but basic support for
pictures is there. More serious control of these (including sound,
and multiple display windows) are supported in Inform 6 when targeting
Glulx. Inform 6 code can be imported into Inform 7 (and Inform 7 does
indeed target Glulx), but they are separate languages.

As far as raif is concerned, Inform 6, Inform 7, TADS 3, and Hugo are
the "major languages". ADRIFT is also heavily used but development
talk about it tends to be on its own forums.

I have chosen to use Quest by Axe Software at the moment to make my
game. Is this software talked about at all on this group? Then after I
get the hang of things I will go for Inform7 or Hugo.

Thank You

Hi,

I really don't see mutch discussion of quest. Reviewers don't seem to
like the games it produces. From the little experience I had, it seems
limited.
