Hey, I thought some people here might like this short comp:

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=1214.0;topicseen

Any format that can run on at least Win32 is good for this comp.

If you've never seen the VGNG, check it out:

http://www.norefuge.net/vgng/vgng.html

Anyone down for co-writing a game for this?

I wouldn't feel too bad about cycling through twenty or so names and
picking the favorite. Though with the VGNG that could be extremely
difficult.

You inspired me to write a program to combine IF game names ... here are
some results (all randomly created from Baf's Guide):

Planet of the Infinite Galaxy
Thermonuclear Toothless Vampire
The Frenetic Five vs. Mr. Come to an End
The Obscene Quest of Dr. House Husband
Zork: The Cavern of Education
Hey, I'm Supposed to get the Blues
Whom Return to the Colossal Cave
Comp00ter Orc
Savoir Tortoise
Nothing But Dragons
What? No Universe
The Silence Snail
A Bear's Night Conspiracy
Secret Quest Butlers
I'm from the Crazy Place
Who Created Main Hall and Beginners Cave
I Rescued Elvis from Communist Chinese Room
Shards of Yogurt
The Sofa Cometh
She's Got a Thing for San Francisco 1906
We Ate New York
The Shopping Cave Adventure
You are Beans
Oh No Book 1
It's About itching
The Incredible Shrinking Caves
Generic New York Apartment Fire Dragon
Poor scenario
Westfront II: the Edge of Disaster

A few actually sound like interesting games:

Define Conspiracy
The Secret Diary of the Troubled Spirit
Hide All Heroes
Spy Dragon
Travels in the Land of Angels
Snow Ruby
My Name is Terror

You really shouldn't encourage me, you know ... here are a few more that I
liked, then:

Guitar Lesson of the Tortoise
Robots - Another abuse of Time Machine
The Sound of Jump Up and Down Screaming
Lost in Space: Dr. Smith Goes Marie Antoinette
Escape from the Crazy Intruder
The Battle of Philip against the Forces of Cat in the Tree
Diary of Obstruction
Dracula Episode 1: String
The Jewels of Misdirection
The Onion Trials of a Warrior
Sherlock Holmes in the Case Isn't Enough
Enhanced Feature
The Orb of Heat
The Adventures of the President of the Chalupa
The Underground Pyramids of Mars
Forever Pig
Adoo's Stinky Invasion
She's Got a Dog's Life
Goose, be Free Range
Dungeon of Foe
The Underoos that Ate to Freedom
The Six-Foot-Tall Man is Nigh
Small Building
Journey to the Center of Mr. Ed
The Door to Cow Shop
Bored Elephant
Guitar of the Caribou
I don't remember why this game is Part 1
Till Death Makes a Monk-Fish Out Of Andrew Plotkin
Slouching Towards St. Bride's
Human Robots

I think "Dungeon of Foe" has to be made one day.

And "The Orb of Heat" is nicely understated, along with "Small Building" and
"Enhanced Feature" (don't overpromise to the player, I guess ...)

(Mike Tabert: Yes, they really are random! Just with some words deleted
occasionally for aesthetic reasons ...)

The more I think about this, the more I'm troubled by how ridiculously
good some of these names sound in comparison to the original games.

I especially like 'Hide All Heroes', though I was mis-remembering it
today at work as 'Hide Our Heroes'. Here is the basic premise. Your
country is hours away from invasion and your government knows it can't
win. So in an effort to maintain one last vestige of hope they go to
their heroes of past wars, men and women who were amazingly strong,
smart, courageous, and powerful, but are now elderly, infirm, senile,
and weak. They sample all their DNA and entrust the samples to -you-.
Your mission is to deliver the DNA to secret cloning laboratories
spread throughout the country. Meanwhlie the stormtroopers of the
invaders will try to stop you. Hilarity ensues!

I really like your IF name generator, David. Will you release it for
us to download or maybe put it up somewhere on the web? I'd love to
use it as the starting push to a new game when I don't have a good
idea.

Er, it's a short C program and a shell script -- if that works for you, then
I can send it to you.

The formula is pretty simple, though, if you want to reproduce it:

* Get a list of game names (I can send you the list I extracted from Baf's
guide if you like).
* Make a list of possible prefixes, eg. for "Zero Sum Game", it would be
"Zero" and "Zero Sum".
* Make a list of possible suffixes, eg. for "Zero Sum Game", "Sum Game" and
"Game".
* Print a random prefix and a random suffix.

Only about one in twenty make the slightest bit of sense, though ...

I can't resist -- here are a few more:

She's Got a Thing for Murders
The Forest in the Village
Concrete Immortal
Pirates and Ninjas on the Roof
The Creature Dancers
A Fistful of History
The President, An Ordinary Ballerina
The Man from Next Morning
Dinner of Malice
Moral of the Moon
A Day for Fresh Hope
My Name is Jack the Magic Healing Plant
Escape from Land
The Domes of Repeating
Little Blue Dilly
Spider Space!
Arnold the Adventurer Caribou
Slap That Day Out
The Battle of Philip against Love
Common Infested Fortress
Sabotage Magic
The Elf's Hands
Catch That Black Death

(That last one sounds a bit grim ...)

Thanks for the offer, David, but I've never touched C before so I
probably wouldn't know what to do with the code. I only understand I7
and some beginning TADS 3.

However, Juhana's idea of making it a web app will probably benefit
everyone.

Some of these things make surprising sense. :)

Suppose that...

... George Orwell wrote a happy sequel to 1984.

"1999: A Utopia"

... Paul Allen Panks was upfront about the programming errors in his
earliest game.

"Paul's First Overflow"

... the Count liked to swim in it, as other aristocrats like to swim in
champaign.

"Dracula's in the Blood"

... someone _really_ went over the top with the demons, blood, zombies
and slime.

"Apocalypse Death's House of Horrors"

... another rushed and half-implemented fantasy adventure got submitted
to the IF Comp.

"Deadline Castle"

... when you reply to your nasty boss's email about reserving a table
for two for him in a very expensive restaurant, you 'accidentally'
include his wife in the recepients.

"CC of Vengeance"

... someone really got fed-up with the Thief in Zork.

"Die Pickpocket"

... we get to explore the factory where they make special effects for
the Apocalypse.

"Doomsday Waxworks"

... the Jesus detector of the Enterprise beeps!

"Religious Alert on Aleph V!"

... the Emperor had been too stubborn to return to France when it became
obvious his attempt to conquer Russia was doomed.

"Frozen Napoleon"

... the main puzzle is to get your pet to stop misbehaving.

"Don't and the Dog"

... Z-abuses were far more horrible than we all think.

"Escape from Z-Chess"

... your interpreter crashes--again!

"Curse Personal Computer? "

... SimPrison was released as an IF project.

"Alcatraz Corporation"

... knights were never the same after the invention of automatic weapons.

"1999: A Quite Brief Joust"

... this guy _almost_ managed to beat Z-Chess.

"Death to my Endgame"

... the kids today never play outside anymore.

"Fran and Bart Want a Computer Game "

... to spite France, the Kremlin planned a very special Sputnik misson.

"Napoleon on the Moon"

... somebody finally took advantage of free software!

"An Escape Enhanced"

... and so did someone else, with more artistic license.

"Mutant Varkana"

... there were travel guides for people with special interests in eating
fruit and avoiding ghosts.

"Bolivia By Pac-Man"

... in these secular times, we need more proof than just some miraculous
Grail.

"Quest for the Holy God"

... Andrew Plotkin started releasing karaoke versions of his works.

"Spider and Song"

... we get yet another prequel.

"Mother of Monte Cristo"

... paleontologists find out facts we did not want to know.

"A Stegosaur's Pantomime"

... another author has had it with simulationism.

"No Liquid"

... the guards might have misunderstood their villainous master. "You
escaped, vile prisoner? You come with us--our orders are very clear!"

"Escape and Dye"

Thanks Juhana for hosting the name generator. It is certainly useful.

I'm trying to recover from laughing at Victor's game names now. Maybe
we should do a comp for humorous games. I'd really like to see the

This one is not funny but the name is powerful. Maybe someone would

Bullying is still a major problem among ghosts.

"Haunted Phantom"

Don't get ill when you're within range of _this_ institution.

"Prehistoric Hospital"

Maestro Michael has an evil scheme to disrupt the concerts of his
competitors, and you are one of his people.

"Cough Duty"

When you _really_ have multiple personality disorder.

"Identity 98"

It seems fun when you see the photographs of smiling babies, but in
practice...

"Disenchanted Mom"

It's harder than you think!

"Losing Your Jade Necklace"

There is _something_ beneath the Sphinx all right, it's just not what
Erich van Däniken thinks!

"Casino Caverns of the Sphinx"

He's back. And he's mad.

"Curse of Sisyphus"

Sick humour.

"Little Green Laugh"

Another horrible evening at your parents in law's.

"Dinner Discord"

The students thought they could get away with anything... boy, were they
wrong!

"Revenge of Five Tutors"

Just play it, and you will.

"I don't remember why this game is called test/demo scenario"

And there is a bunch for the AIF-crowd, especially those interested in
kinky stuff:

"Moist the Dungeonkeeper"
"Best of Body Revisited"
"Moist Dogboy"
"Savage Search for Amanda"
"The Warlord, The Princess & Punches"

An AIF-dungeon crawl for real perverts?

Posting these is probably going to get old fast, but this thing does
produce fun output. Thanks for posting it. Here are a few of my
favorite brushes with randomness:

First, an obvious but kinetic equation (repunctuated, obviously):
Krakatoa + Tuna = Bloody Mess

Ever get flamed by the been-there-done-that crowd?
Revenge Of Clueless Bob Newbie!

Here are a couple of upscale "adult" games:
Forbidden Godot
Sins Museum
Leatherworld of the Moon Goddess
Highland Squeal

One not so upscale, perhaps:
Whore-House Infiltrator

An inspired piece of peasantsploitation:
Farmer Narcolepsy

Needs no comment:
Artifiction of F.A.R.T

A companion piece to the "No tea" sequence in HHGG?
The Epitome of Toastlessness

And requiring a journey into the:
Lair of The Toaster

A clueless tourist gets in with the wrong crowd in Germany:
Eins, Zwei, Framed

Finally, the story of one inspiring hero:
Drool: The Man

Have fun,
Erik

Normally you have to go through all the trouble of actually writing a
game to get terrible reviews from people. I thought I'd save a few
unfortunate authors the time and effort and review these games in
advance:

"Arnold the Step"
Excellent prose, but severely lacking in interactivity. I found the
romantic subplot a little difficult to relate to.

"Jigsaw Skull Gorge"
Set in the old west, this piece features some highly implausible
puzzles. Probably not a Xyzzy candidate.

"Briefcase Bunny"
Furry AIF in Corporate America. Why did I play this? I keep washing my
hands, over and over, and I still feel dirty.

"Pork 2: The Gizzard Song"
Although the idea of an Interactive Fiction musical is a novel one,
the author's staggering ignorance of basic porcine anatomy renders
this game unplayable without consulting the walkthrough.

"Picnic Means Escape"
This game didn't work for me. Prison guards just aren't THAT gullible.

"Pick Up the Phone Booth Key to Time"
Doctor Who fan-fiction is a misuse of TADS 3, isn't it? Isn't there
something in the license agreement forbidding that? Well, as this game
demonstrates, there should be.

"The Incredible Shrinking Cube Game"
If Ernest Hemmingway wrote a novel based on whack-a-mole, it wouldn't
have sucked this much.

"Adventures in I Ran"
If you've ever wanted to BE Jimmy Carter, here's your chance! Yeah. Me
neither.

"Getting to know the Balrog and the Cat"
This is what happens when the source code to Galatea falls into the
hands of someone like Rybread Celsius. If Emily Short wants to sue
him, I'll contribute to her legal fund.

"Heather's Easter Time: Renegade Version"
I had to consult the walkthrough to find the shotgun, but otherwise
very playable.
