NEED HELP WITH TWO FILM TITLES

plot of this film concerns a time in
the future when law and order has broken down completely. Gangs rule
the streets and their is chaos
and lawlessness everywhere. I remember a scene from the film when a
gang breaks into the house of this young couple and the gang leader
orders one of his thugs to break the legs of the young man who lives
there. This gang is traveling in the back of a van or truck. The gang
members appear to be like Neanderthals who only grunt and groan, but
who have a lust for wonton violence and destruction.
The leader of the gang, however, is well spoken and is reading books
through the movie. I remember
another scene where the grandmother of the young man who was attacked
in his home, goes to visit
him in the hospital, only to be killed by another gang on motorcycles.
She is carrying a bouquet of
flowers with her and a crucifix at the time of her death.
The second film I saw was also back in the early to mid-1980's in the
USA. The plot of this film is a
time piece which takes place, in what looks like the 18th or 19th
century. It concerns a woman and
her kids who are left homeless and poverty stricken by the death of
the their wealthy husband/father.
There is another wealthy man who wants to marry the widow, but he does
not want her or her kids
to bring any material possessions with them. The new husband is even
upset when one of the kids
bring a teddy bear along. The new husband wants the mother and her
kids to break all ties with the
past and he vows to buy all new things for them. There is another
scene toward the beginning of the
movie where an old man is joking around with a group of kids. He is
with the kids near a staircase
and he entertains them by blowing out candles by farting on them.
Any help with these two film titles would be greatly appreciated.
