Okay, I was at the Redbox DVD rental machine, and was surprised to
notice "Hostel 3." I thought it was still being made. As well I had
read the film was set in Las Vegas. I further browsed across "Haunted
Casino." Considering these productions of sort of a common theme, I
rented them both.

I should point out that the director of Hostel 3 was somebody other
than Eli Roth, who was the director of the original and the first
sequel. Roth is something of an auteur, and though one may appreciate
or despise his cinematic visions, his talent has been evident in the
few films he's done so far. But he wasn't involved with Hostel 3. I
had read incorrect media accounts that he would produce it, while
another would direct, but those were inaccurate. I listened to an
interview in which Roth said he hoped they made an excellent film, but
he himself had nothing to do with it.

The Hostel 3 creators did not make an excellent film. It's still gory,
a little less than than the other Hostel films, but it doesn't much
capture their atrocity and realism. As well, it takes some cartoonish
liberties with the Hostel concept. There's a Vegas lounge-like
environment where an air-conditioned elegantly-dressed audience
watches torture sequences behind a big plate-glass window. There's a
gladitorial thing, and a victim who is dressed like a cheerleader who
is then attacked by insects. There's not really an hostel involved
(there's some token screentime at a supposed hostel). Unto itself I
guess Hostel 3 would be merely mediocre, but following the earlier
films it's quite a fail.

Speaking of fails, Haunted Casino is a low-budget amateurish thing
where some character inherits a shuttered casino from her uncle; I
should caveat my criticism by acknowledging I didn't watch the entire
thing because I found it too awful, which theoretically leaves open
the possibility that it has a brilliant second half.

So there you have it, two films to avoid (Haunted Casino more so)
should you choose to listen to me.
