Okay, so I'm a weirdo, but I enjoy Roleplaying Vampire: The Masquerade, as
well as several different Horror genre games that I (and my friends) have
created. As we were sitting around the other night, we started discussing
what was the best vampire movie and ended up taking up nearly three and a
half hours. So what do you guys think is the best vampire movie?

I couldn't narrow my choices down, so I took the cheap way out and said I'd
think about it. Diplomatic, that's me. {Laughs}

The Lost Boys, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Salem's Lot comes to mind.
However, one guy said that he enjoyed A Vampire In Brooklyn (starring Eddie
Murphy) quite a lot.

Wow, I would consider those amongst the rankest vampire films (although
"Salem's Lot" holds a special place in my heart.)

Maybe not the best, but when I think of Vampire movies, "Near Dark"
always springs to mind. It's favorite of mine.
"The Forsaken" is probably one of the more recent ones I've seen, not a
great movie by any stretch, but quite a bit better than "A Vampire in
Brooklyn" for God's sake.

I used to be a bit of a roleplayer myself (Deadlands and CoC mostly),
Vampire seemed interesting, but a bit too "I hang out at Hot Topic" for
my taste.

Kiss of the Vampire starring Nicolas Cage ;)

common....Cage walking through a park at night saying 'i'm a vampire,
i'm a vampire' while trying to catch pigeons for blood is pricless (Not
to mention his recital of the alphabet while in therapy...wtf!!), though
no vampire actor will ever come close to the oddness that was David
Bowie as a vampire.

Now on a serious note, I recommend Lost Boys, Bram Stokers Dracula and
Nosferatu (Classic)

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Near Dark is one of my favorite movies ever,
of any kind. Surely my favorite vampire movie, and quite possibly my
favorite horror movie. Just wonderful in every way.

I thought Lost Boys was kind of lame. I couldn't watch Bram Stoker's
Dracula, because Keanu was so painfully bad; I had to turn it off.
Salem's lot is fun, but not brilliant, to my way of thinking, although
the vampire is scary looking.

Nosferatu is terrific, of course, and I loved Shadow of the Vampire.
Dracula (the Tod Browning classic with Bela Lugosi is sort of talky and
slow, but worth seeing for Lugosi and Frye's performances.) I recently
saw Martin, an early Romero movie, and found it quite wonderful in a
very odd way. And I confess to a fondness for Fright Night; Chris
Sarandon is too sexy.

Hated Interview With A Vampire. Boring as hell. And it somehow managed
to make Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, and Brad Pitt *all* look ugly. I
would have thought that impossible.

Ravenous is one of my favorite horror movies of the past few years, and
while it's not a flat-out vampire movie, it has some strong
vampire-esque overtones.

I'll look for this...

Love At First Bite

A very funny movie that takes it vampiring (is that a word?) seriously.

Lifeforce. Hey, I saw it when I was little, and the sweet special effects and
the GORGEOUS lead vampiress had me sold. And I still like the film.

Never seen Salem's Lot, but isn't it a TV movie? That always makes me
nervous when I'm thinking of a rental.

To be honest, I don't think there ARE that many good vampire movies.
Of the ones I've seen, I liked THE LOST BOYS (but I want to stress
here, "I liked it" is far from "I think it's a fine film" ;-) and I
must confess I also really enjoyed FRIGHT NIGHT for some reason.

Hated BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and the dreadful INTERVIEW WITH THE
VAMPIRE. I can't stand this whole neo-gothic-Anne Rice-vampires
(spelled "vampyres", of course) are sexy protagonists bullshit. Give
me a stake and let me ram it in their undead hearts.

One film that impressed me was JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES.

What did you guys think of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN?

I cannot understand the Cult Of Ann Rice. I read a few of her books on
tape (back when I was doing a lot of long distance driving), and very
rapidly got to the point where everything sounded exactly alike, and it
was all boring as hell.

A good friend who loves horror movies has recommended this; I have to
check it out.

Another on the "must-see" list -- hmm. Maybe when I've turned in my
latest manuscript (deadline in 9 days!) it's time for a vampire double
feature?

**I really enjoyed John Carpenter's Vampires. A lot of people fault me for
that, but I don't really care. The film was fun to watch and James Woods and
Thomas Ian Griffith's performances were exciting.

Likewise, From Dusk Til Dawn was great! Maybe I'm just a sucker for
Tarentino (or Hayek, hubba, hubba), but I thought the flick was awesome. It
had some pretty humorous moments and the whole idea of the vampires luring
unsuspecting truckers and bikers in was a plus. I've only gotten to see one
of the sequels, but it wasn't as good as the first one. Maybe it's because I
anticipated the sequel to be related to the first one in something other
than name, but it was still worth giving it a look see.

While we're on the subject of humor and vampires ... anyone like Tales from
the Crypt: Bordello of Blood, except me?

I liked Interview witha Vampire personally and ,and Queen of the Damned,
but the books were better by far.

Totally agree with Lifeforce being one of the best, a friend of mine
managed to find it on video for me in a bargin bucket and yes it was great
watching the lead vampiress wandering around with no clothes on sold me
when I was about 11 when I first saw it...marvellous

Some excellent ones:

Black Sunday (Italian horror w/Barbara Steele)
Interview with the Vampire (in spite of myself, I loved it to pieces. So sue
me. :-) )
Count Yorga, Vampire
Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter

Totally agree with these, the Count Yorga sequel is worthwhile as well. I'll
throw in Near Dark, The Night Stalker, Vampire Hunter D and most of the Hammer
ones with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

Yikes can't believe that you've never heard of the seminal Black Sunday. Well
it was filmed by famed director Mario Bava in 1960. Sorry can't tell you any
more, it would spoil it for you.

It's called "The Return of Count Yorga," made in 1971.
