Opened July 22, 1884, the Creative House of Tverskaya Oblast
is an Academic Dacha for the academic study of Classical
Russian Realism. Here there is an uninterrupted tradition of
masters: Repin, Rerich, Levitan, Nesterov, Chistiakov, Serov
and Vrubel.
"This is the essence of Russia. All her soul, all her beauty. It is
like music." (Repin) Situated on a forested peninsula of Lake
Mstiino in the Tverskaya Oblast near Vishnii Volochok, is the
Creative Academic Dacha. Lake Mstiino is along the Msta River
approximately 175 miles north and west of Moscow. In this
serene setting creative energy flourishes.
The Professor: Yuri Skorikov is a student of Avilov, Grekov
and A. Gerasimov, graduated from the Academy in 1951 and is a
professor of art. Through his lifetime of study and teaching he
continues the tradition of many centuries of master:apprentice
relationship. Skorikov influenced the entire realm of Russian
Realism with the System of Harmony which he developed. He is
noted for his history genre works which include large scale
portraits, landscapes and horses.

The Interpreter: Alexander Gubanov, a native of Russia and
student of Russian Realism, will provide expert interpretation
throughout the course of study. He has lived and taught art in
California for the past 2 years. This experience has provided him
with both the language and cultural perspective necessary to
perform this most difficult work.

The Facility: Studios are designed for artists. Large and
comfortable these work spaces have excellent light and high
ceilings. The Creative House compound includes a
comprehensive library which provides ample background and
history of world art, a museum which holds the work of 19th
century masters and the Culture Center with an exhibit hall where
current works are displayed.
Accommodations are comfortable rooms for 2 persons
with common rooms. Typical Russian fare is prepared in the
cafeteria. Vegetarian and other diets can be accommodated.

Program Features: 6 days per week
3 hours Drawing instruction with model, nude or portrait
3 hours Painting instruction with model, nude or portrait
Work on individual level with instructor
Emphasis on composition in genre painting, organization
of figures, space and tone values
Lectures on System of Harmony, Composition,
Techniques of old masters in oil painting by Skorikov.
Topics will include use of imprimatura under paintings,
dead color preparation, glazes and more
Skill development in still life and landscape upon request
