Could anyone give me some ideas on how to sell a series of paintings
from an artist in China. I'm working with a charity located in New York.
The Charity just started up and aims to support study in the Humanities,
Arts, and Sciences. We are helping an artist in China sell some of his
paintings in America and haven't had much luck (since we've never done
this sort of thing before). We've had 8 of his paintings for almost a
year now and have only been able to sell 1. I've written to a handfull
of local galleries, but none were interested. The paintings are of
contemporary Chinese life (city and country). They are done in oils and
are approximately 5ft. x 4ft. (maybe a little bigger).

You probably will not have success selling in the Chinese American
Community or with the Asian community generally. I would suggest trying
the Jewish community since they have a history of arts support and (my
feeling) a sensitivity towards China. If you are in NYC, you might try
the decorating trades, catering to offices in the financial district.
Another way is to place paintings in critical areas where people with
means will see them, become familiar with them, and maybe buy them. That
is, try high traffic offices in the NYC financial district by offering to
hang the works free of charge on the chance that someone will fall in
love with it. Stupid as it sounds, you might cut a deal with the
receptionist to get a commission on sale if she/he can promote the work.
You can't always count on people coming to a gallery - that really
doesn't have the people throughput you need.

Good luck
