wanted: cheap artist's canvas

Does anybody have a source for inexpensive, yet good quality, artist's
canvas? Looking for acrylic primed medium weight cotton duck. Mail
order or large quantity requirements OK.

I am beginning to sound like I work for these folks, but I don't, nor do
I have any investment in them. They do have some of the best prices
on quality art supplies though. UTRECHT Manufacturing Corp.

We're talking about UTRECHT here. I know they have an 800 number
for ordering, but why they don't include it in their ads is puzzling to
me. In the ads they run in the art magazines, they list a long distance
number, which is (718) 768-2525, and they advertise a Free Catalog,
but there is nowhere an 800 number. Strange. I don't have one of their
catalogs at the moment, so I couldn't refer to an 800 number.

Some of us sleep on satin -- which is not my idea of ideal "canvas" material.
Nor is the cotton bed sheets commonly used for bedding. I suppose you
could use it, but would be very unsatisfactory surface unless you are a
VERY delicate painter.

Utrecht has a bunch of 800 numbers - depending on location - NY is
1-800-352-9016. San Francisco is 1-800-961-9612. Call either, they will
give you the number of the outlet nearest you. By the way, thanks for
reminding me that it's time to place another order.

That's odd. Why wouldn't they advertise a single 800 number for use
by all who live in USA and Canada as do most other mail order firms?
I don't think they mail order from their branches, but what do I know.

They don't advertise a single 800 number because 'THEY DON'T'. Do they
need to clear this with you? They do mail order from their branches.

and then there's the tradition of painting on silk.
if you're looking for *cheap* canvas, check with local hardware
stores. They often have canvas that's as good as most student grade
canvas... and much cheaper than art supply houses. Is there a
company in or near your town that makes canvas awnings or tents?
a lot of these places have big scraps that they'll sell for
very little. Some sell *large* chunks of canvas for much better
prices than arts suppliers. Don't expect to find exceptionally
fine, absolutely smooth and regular canvas though... so if you
need that kind of surface, art supply houses are still good for that.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned in this thread the obvious.
Check with yard-goods fabric stores. I have bought my canvas there
when I needed small amounts and was out of a roll. Most fabric shops
handle ordinary cotton canvas and some even have linens in wide
rolls. They usually will not have widths over four feet or so IMX.
