It depends on what style & what medium, and where he wants to paint
(I would paint Uluru - Ayers Rock - differently from Adel Crag!)

He's into oil. Sorry, should have mentioned that.

It also depends on how old your stepson is and how much (if any) painting experience he already has. But a small book that's really helped me, and continues to inspire me, is:

Oil Painting Pure and Simple
by Ron Ranson and Trevor Chamberlain

It appears to be out of print, but Amazon has a lot of used copies for sale.

I have seen 3 or 4 of his oils. I am sure he has done more. Pretty
good talent, I'd say. He is about 22.
