This book sucks mightily. It just has lots of artspeak. It has hardly
any historical facts in it. It just tells you what you should think
about all the types of art in history. It had 1 or 2 pages on
Bouguereau. It denigrated his paintings in a snide and snearing
manner. This book is worthless crap. I got the 5th edition published
in 1970 from the library. Boy, I hope there are or will be some art
history books that are objectively written and include a lot of
historical facts instead of just some stupid bitch's opinions.
By the way, I went to talk to the oil painting teacher and asked him
if I would be required to paint any modern art in his class if I took
it. He said I'd have to do just one cubist painting. I told him I
despise modern art. He said why? I said it's a hoax.
Even if I can't change their policies, I think it's my duty to tell
each and every art teacher that modern art is crap. There are too many
art students who are silent about this crap. They need to know there
are people who don't buy into it!

I know how tempting it is, but telling idiot teachers what you think
can be a waste of time. I always aped their bullshit by painting
better abstraction because I knew some clever techniques.
I tried painting realism at first and did it rather poorly because I
didn't have any teachers who passed on knowledge. Unlike others who
made similar attempts I kept trying, much to the irritation of the
schmiermeister who ran the class and passed out marks. Eventually I
decided to show him that I could produce the required academic crap
and he approved. That proved to me that I was dealing with a first
class Fox style prick.
I always won tuition scholarships and a paid year in Europe by showing
my realistic work along with academic abstraction for the artzy
fartzies to nibble on.
Of course Fox considers this "sour grapes." However unlike Fox I never
had to AK anyone in order to sell my paintings.
BTW When I started out professionally my surreal paintings took a long
time to finish. In between finishing time I used to do among other
knock-outs schlock Fox like schmiers which I sold wholesale to a
dealer who wholesaled them as office decoration. (all the amusing
details are in my book)
Sure, write what you really think, but in my view also flow with the
fashions and give the idiots what they want. Its better to be rich and
healthy than poor and sick.

So do it. Always good to criticise rubbish from a position of
knowledge and experience. Make yourself a better critic of cubism.

Have you considered just how much of a staggering arsehole this will
make you appear ? You might be right, but your _attitude_ is
perfectly calculated to irritate and alienate everyone you meet.
Suppose that there's a teacher there who could teach you exactly what
you want to learn. Now how do you think they will respond to "Richard
Cool, the wunderkind prodigy who explains to all his teachers how
wrong they are" ?
