Hello there:

My wife wants to start her hobby again of oil and water paiting... We went
to Michaels Art Supplies and other stores... Things are expensive and
no one is there to explain it properly.... Could a kind soul help us out ?
She came from india last year to join me here...

Any mail order companies with reasonable prices..

thanks

What's the question? Are art supplies expensive? Yes. Where are
cheap places to buy them? Depends on where you live. Probably a good
bet is to look in the local yellow pages under art supplies, and then
visit a few places to compare prices. Here in the Boston/Cambridge
area, Pearl Arts & Crafts on Mass. Ave. is quite reasonable.

There are also mail order places to buy art supplies. Artist's
Connection, Flax, and Fidelity Graphics are 3 that come to mind, but
there are others as well.

As for explanations, your best bet is probably to look in a book on
oil painting and a book on watercolor painting to see what supplies
they recommend for someone starting out. Some of these books also
discuss specific brands of paints, etc. Your local library probably
has books like this.

Did I miss something? Was there some other information you were
looking for?

another option for art supplies is the Utrecht Catalogue. there are utrech stires stores in new york, philadelphia, boston, washington, dc, detroit, chicago
and berkely, california. the boston store has very reasonable prices.
the number for the main office in brooklyn, ny is 1-800-223-9132 and
they will give you the infomation you need to get a catalogue.

A good place to get mail order art supplies is Daniel Smith, in Seattle,
Washington. You can call them toll free at 1-800-426-6740, or write to
them at PO Box 84268, Seattle, WA 98124-5568. Their prices are pretty low,
and their catalog doesn't cost a whole lot either, five or six dollars.
Good luck, and have fun!

Cheers,
alison
