I have a lot of reading to keep me busy, HOW NEW YORK STOLE THE IDEA OF MODERN
ART by Serge Guilbaut currently. Anyone familiar with Suzi Gablik's
HAS MODERNISM FAILED? would get a far more in depth appreciation for the role
of left wing politics from this. Both are rather sympathetic to the left but
even if one is not this book is good reading especially if one is basically
ignorant of the influence politics has played in modern art.
I will leave here recommending a site to visit: www.aristos.org
Some of their better articles may be available only by buying backordered
issues of the newsletter (Mark Helprin's Against the Dehuminization of Art
perhaps) but what is available from the site is interesting too. I don't
endorse all the views of Aristos. Neither do I think Gablik is much more than a
revivalist for radical politics and mysticism in modern art and Guilbaut could
be accused of looking at art from too strictly a political scope and with a
bias toward a french view of things which he comes by honestly enough. But for
those who are open minded enough to investigate some heterodoxical views
(Gablik only slightly) its all good reading.
