Hiya folks,

OK .......... I'm ready to hear critiques ..... good and bad. I need to
know if I should continue to paint ...... or give it up for now.

I know we paint for ourselves ..... and our own pleasure ...... but for me
... at this time ....... I'm painting for both pleasure and to sell ..... so
I need to know if my paintings show signs of talent ... or not??

I'm getting discouraged .... since I get NO support from family or friends
...... and my husband doesn't understand or appreciate art ..... so I'm
asking my fellow artists ..... what do you think?

Click on the 'copyright' information line ..... for a few misc.
pieces.......

Thank you,
Dee

The paintings are not up to MY standards, but that's OK. You're just
starting out. I recommend you buy some books to learn more about
painting techniques and also study & practice drawing, because drawing
is the backbone of good painting. But as long as you enjoy it, keep
painting. You're the only one you have to please. You might want to
join a community college painting class. That way you can spend time
each week socializing with people like yourself and get lots of
feedback. Maybe you should also try different mediums too, just for
the fun of it. I guess my primary medium right now is Acrylic paint,
but I also draw with graphite, charcoal, gel markers, and pastel
pencils. I also bought a basic set of oil painting supplies. I'm an
art supply junkie. I like to try all kinds of mediums. Above all, your
art is for yourself, so don't let anyone spoil your enjoyment of art.
Just do what you like. I think art is good for the soul.

Dee Dee, I can't say I really like your paintings. The colours are way
too unmixed for me and also the compositions and themes are not
interesting. "Flame of Passion" is starting to become better. "Don't
Fall too Far" is spoiled by the tree. The background is not too bad as
abstract. I think - having also produced works like this for a while -
is that you need to go back to really working hard at preliminary
drawing. Drawing is what it's really all about. Also blend colour and
look at colour more.

Hi Dee,

this is my first post on this newsgroup. I'm not a professional art
critic, I just occasionally paint on my own. Different people will
be impressed by different things in a painting: techinque and
execution,
versus emotional impact of viewing a piece, and probably other things
too.
Technique and exectuion comes from practice and study/knowing the
tricks,
and emotional impact is something a bit more elusive.

At first view the paintings did not do much for me. The "Sexual
Energy"
painting became more intersting when viewed up close. The technique
used
to achieve the texture on the paint is new to me, and I found it
interesting.
(Did you use your fingers?) I liked how the boundary between the red
paint and the dark background isn't well defined. Didn't like how
the yellow paint's color faded towards the left. It makes it look
damaged.

"Don't Fall Too Far" did not appeal to me, mostly because of the
colors
that I found depressing. The way the apples fall in a sort of
suspended
motion is curious, but I only caught that after more careful
examination
of the painting. The tree's growth looks stunted, as if it had not
received enough nourishment and water. Overall, the painting is a bit
depressing. This is fine if that was what you were aiming for.

"Emotions" was more interesting in terms of color. But I would argue
that
not too much work appears to be required for this sort of painting,
and
so this takes some value away from it. If you had been the first
person in the history of the world to painting something along those
lines it would be a different story. But I'm not arguing for novelty
for
novelty's sake.

I like your suggestions of using this forum for critiquing other
people's
work. I'd appreciate your feedback on one of my paintings:
http://users.rcn.com/tomeberhard/art/Capi_Visaoleja.jpg
(and anyone else is welcome to tear it to schreds too. :) )
The painting is 40" x 60", the picture does not show how the different
shades of blue blend into each other. The actual painting is a bit
different. Took about 2 months with a small brush. Later I discovered
I could have the same effect with a cloth in a few seconds. Oh well,
I enjoyed the work.

Other people have suggested taking drawing classes. That may be fine,
but I was recently flipping through a community college's catalog, and
there was an art class listed. There was a picture of someone's
drawing
"before" and "after" the class. The "after" drawing contained more
technical tricks and work, and looked better than the first one, but
when I looked at it I felt that it had lost the unique "touch" of
the first drawing. So take a drawing class, collect the instructor's
gold nuggets but don't focus on technique only. And keep in mind that
I'm just some punk kid that doesn't know what he's talking about... :)

Tom.

Hi Tom,

I really appreciate the time you took to critique 'carefully' my paintings.
:-)

It's really good that you looked further .... deep ..... because you got
EXACTLY what I was experiencing inside with "Don't Fall Too Far"!!!

I have been very depressed lately..... trying to get out of a abusive
marriage ..... to free myself. I've lived with this for 6 years, and just
now am finding the strength to paint ...... and to save my money and leave.

So you see .... the dark colors ... feeling ...... and the tree's stunted
growth for lack of water ... and sunshine ... is SOOOO on the mark!! I'm
glad to see somebody took the time to pick it up!

Sexual Energy does make me angry ..... because I was putting my sexual
passion that hasn't been allowed to bloom, for lack of attention on the part
of my husband ....... into the canvas. The brush DID slip from my hand on
the yellow .... and I'm upset about that ..... I could only try to wash it
off .... and do it again .... but not sure if that would do even more
damage!

Emotions was allot of work , believe it or not ..... I know it doesn't LOOK
like it .... but if you look even closer and deeper into that one ...... you
will see devils (demons = pain, etc.) and daggers ...... self explanatory.

If you would .... I'd LOVE It if you could look at the remaining paintings,
there is one more on that page, and if you click on room 2 .... there are 2
more paintings.

NOW ....... to your painting! The very first thing I saw and felt .... was
a vast and angry ocean ..... with a boat .. and a person that's been thrown
out .... and is all alone in the middle of nowhere .... struggling and
trying to survive ..... in hopes somebody will come ..... all though it's
sad to say .... it feels like nobody will. It's a VERY scary ... lonely
painting. Just my take! :-)

OH .... and hey .... you're NOT just some punk kid! LOL!! You've seen
deeper than anyone so far ... into these paintings, and that's a gift of
creativity!

Thank you ever so much ....... if you have more you'd like me to see .....
show me!
Hugs,
Dee
