The exhibition "Artists from Ukraine: Works on Paper" organized by the
O'Kane Gallery and curated by Ukrainian-American artist Lydia
Bodnar-Balahutrak and University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty printmaker
artist Sandria Hu will be on view at O'Kane Gallery from January 21
through February, 1997. The exhibition will then travel to the College of
the Mainland Art Gallery in Texas City, where it will be on view March 6
through April 13, 1997. Ukraine's deep artistic heritage protrayed by
contemporary artists in Ukrane will have this rare opportunity to be seen
and appreciated in Texas. Following its Texas venue, portions of this
exhibition may travel to other U.S. cities.
A catalogue of the exhibition is being produced by the O'Kane Gallery. It
will include an essay by art historian and art history professor at
University of Houston-Downtown, Dr. Susan Baker, and a listing of the
participating artists with short biographies and photoreproductions of
their work. Both hosting institutions plan gallery talks, lectures, and
other exhibition-related events, which will be announced at a later date.
Bodnar-Balahutrak has lent some work from her and her husband's private
collection, which began with her first visit to Ukaine in 1991 to the Lviv
Art Institute of Fine and Applied Arts, now the Lviv Academy of Art, and
gathered suitable and available work from Kyiv artists/printmakers for
this exhibition of works on paper. When Bodnar-Balahutrak returned to
Ukraine in September that same year, she brought back some small prints
from two Lviv artists to add to the exhibiting group.
This exhibition of 48 artworks by 20 artists provides an opportunity to
become acquainted with the diversity, range, and scope of a selection of
contemporary artists living and working in Ukraine - in jet prints and
mixed media works on paper. The Ex-Libris form is well-represented, as is
large-format and serial work.
The artists represented in the exhibitin are: Andriy Chebykin, Danylo
Dovboshynsky, Valentin Gordiychuk, Halyna Halynska, Alina Ivanova,
Yevgenia Kharkova, Ksenia Khodakovska, Oksana Kirpenko, Yurko Koch,
Kateryna Korniychuk, Andrew Levitsky, Lubomyr Medvid', Irina Movchan,
Olena Mychaylova-Rodyna, Olha Pohribna-Koch, Oleksandra Prakhova, Serhiy
Shulyma, Oksana Stratiychuk, Olena Yakovleva, and Ihor Yaremchuk.
