Still Life and Landscapes

looking at these genres of painting. But these can be broken down into
many other categories (basically two, good & bad.) I believe what makes
them interesting to me is how relevant and modern they are in their ideas.
For example at a recent large show, there was a landscape of our region,
the usually misty mountains. It was unframed oil on canvas about 3' x 5'
and so well executed that it invited the viewer closer. It was then I saw
on the left a very small orange spot, the beginnings of a forest fire.
There was the modernism, in the idea and the irony. It was as if the
painter said to viewer "Gottcha!"
The still life that I enjoyed was a small Vermeer-like painting of a
"Kitchen Aide."
Recently CNN had a byte on a huge exhibition/sale in NYC. Jane Seymour the
actress was promoting it in front of her paintings. I could tell by the
frames that I wouldn't like these still-lifes and landscapes and sure
enough when the camera zoomed in, there was the same old hackneyed subject
matter, the lack of ideas.
If we dismiss all landscapes and still lifes we would have to ignore
Donald Sultan, Gerhard Richter, Wolf Kahn
fill in the blanks...

Even more embarrassing is the fact that I'm going to see Audrey
Flack next weekend give an art talk and am a big fan of her
"Marilyn" which is a still-life magnifique!

It is not the subject, but how it is depicted.
The no-soul-in-it-genre includes hordes of coyotes,
but numerous abstracts, too.
