Help!
I was in the National Gallery in D.C. a few months ago and saw a
beautiful, colorful abstract painting by, I believe, one Gerhardt
Richter. It is in the contempoary section, and I believe it's the
only one of his.

I lost the paper I wrote the name on, so I was wondering if anyone
who has been there/is going soon would know the name of this piece.
I'd like to get a print of it eventually. Thank you.

I think it's titled "Abstract Painting 780-1." It was acquired by the
NGA in 1993.

I haven't been there recently, but yes, it does sound like Gerhard
Richter, IMO on of the best painters of our time. If you want to know
the name of the work, why don't you call the curatorial offices at the
National Gallery? Frankly, I would be surprised if there is a
reproduction of it. Richter paints both abstractions and photo
paintings, although lately he has been doing more of the former.
Currently there is an exhibition of the entire Atlas, a collection of
some several thousand photographic images, most of them by him, that
he uses as a sort of archive for his paintings. It has closed for the
summer, but will reopen in September and be up through the spring. I
recommend you see it. It at the Dia Art Foundation, on West 22nd in
NYC.
