This is a list of upcoming Art openings at museums, galleries, alternative
art spaces,universities and cyber galleries in Texas. If you know of others, please let
us know. Also, if you have a show that doesn't fit into the above categories, send it
anyway and we'll try to fit it in somewhere. This list is not perfect, mistakes are bound
to happen. I would suggest calling before traveling out of town to see a show. Remember that some
Museums and Galleries are closed on Mondays and some are by appt only. Suggestions appreciated.
The Venue list should have been mailed to you already, if not please let us know,
because they are not listed with the opening list. The VenueList is a list of just that,
Venues. If you have one to add or need a new list mail us!

Artwalk is the second Thursday from 5-8:30 p.m. in the heart of the historic downtown
cultural district in Abilene, Texas. An evening of art, music, and fun. Participating
businesses stay open later and exhibit art, photographs and sculptures. Restaurants
and coffee shops offer live music, museums and theaters have special treats for visitors, as does
the public library.

THE AUSTIN ARTS COMMISSION is seeking members for the State Resources
Panel for 1997-98 Cultural Contracts process. Panelists will include practicing
artists,as well as representatives from various cultural constituencies and arts

THE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY at the University of Texas will
present "Viewpoint '97," a program of distinguished curators, scholars, and critics.
Linda Cathcart and Dennis Adrian, this year's invitees, will present various
programs consisting of public lectures, seminars, and studio critiques. Viewpoint
'97 will begin with a public presentation by both guests on Thu, Feb 6, 4pm, room
1.102 in the Art Building, 23rd and San Jacinto. A variety of seminars, public

A LIFE DRAWING OPEN STUDIO is offered by the Artists' Coalition of Austin at
ArtSpace Gallery, 1705 Guadalupe. Cost is $4/session. Tuesdays, 7-10pm;

LAUGHING AT THE SUN GALLERY, 2209 S. First, offers a variety of art classes for the
new year, including metal sculpture, paper collage, watercolor, collage, life

THE TEXAS FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION is currently taking submissions for "New
American Talent: The Thirteenth Exhibition," a national all-media competition that
surveys contemporary two- and three-dimensional art by emerging and mid-career
artists living in the U.S. Sponsored by Philip Morris Companies, Inc. The juror is
Robert Storr, artist, critic, and curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture
at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Slide deadline is April 11. For a

BAGELRY DELI & ESPRESSO CAFE is currently accepting submissions from
artsits who wish to exhibit their work in 1997. They have five locations located in the
upper-income residential areas in Austin. They ask that you only respond if you are
"committed to displaying Austin talents being second to none." 263-7280 to find out
what that means.
CLAYWAYS POTTERY STUDIO & GALLERY is seeking submissions for an
April show, "For the Birds." The exhibit will feature bird houses, bird baths, bird
feeders, and similar items in clay, metal, glass, or wood. 459-6445.
LAUGHING AT THE SUN GALLERY is currently seeking entries to "The Dream
Show" and the "Straight White Male" exhibits. They are setting up appointments for

"SOUNDS LIKE TEXAS," an exhibition on Texas music, will be presented at the
South by Southwest (SXSW) Trade Show, sponsored by the Center for American
History and the University of Texas. The show, held at the Austin Convention Center, will
feature rare photographs, recordings, posters, sheet music, correspondence, andother materials
from the CFAH's extensive music research collections. (A special emphasis is placed on
bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan.) The hours of exhibition will run from 11am-6pm during the
conference, March 13-15. This exhibition is running as a part of "The First Annual
South-1st-By-West-6th Music Art Show," an event/exhibit featuring music-related artworks shown
at Laughing at the Sun Gallery and Wild About Music (see gallery listings above). 708-1700

WHISTLE STOP! is a sale of a unique assortment of handmade whistles by six local
ceramic artists, to be held at Four Corners Tiles, 916-A W. Third. Sat, March 15,
