Recently, a couple friends of mine attended a Los Angeles showing of
the pinup art of "Olivia" (Olivia deBerardinis). They brought back an
autographed copy of her book "American Geisha", and thumbing through
it got me interested in surfing the web for other pinup art. There
certainly is a lot of it! [Note: If you're interested, one of the
best sites I've found so far is www.thepinupfiles.com, which has a
great many samples uncluttered by annoyances.]
My question is this: Who do you think is the BEST PINUP ARTIST?
Of course, this is a matter of opinion, but I thought I'd see what the
"rec.arts.fine" group (with its presumably well-practiced eyes)
thought of the matter.
Actually, perhaps I should first be asking, "Is pinup art even
consider 'fine' art?" I'm not sure what the definition of 'fine' is,
and it of course depends on the specific artist/work, but in my
opinion, I'd have to say that a surprising amount of the pinup art
I've seen online deserves a "yes".
As for my favorite pinup artist (so far)? Well, while my personal
survey has been hardly comprehensive, right now, I'd have to give the
nod to Gil Elvgren. It's a combination of subject, scenario,
technique, and - oh, yeah - great legs.
Your opinion?
Thanks,
Todd

P.S. By the way, I think the above mentioned "Olivia", though not my
favorite, is very, very good. I particularly liked a painting of
"Elvira" she did in "American Geisha". She's also, obviously, has a
thing for Bettie Page - join the crowd, Olivia!
Who buys that stuff?
Some of these things are good maybe but you cannot hang it on a wall that
would be embarrassing.I do not understand Pin Ups.I dont know if that is
art..
.It is however interesting to see the changes through the years. The 30s 40
50 60s etc all wanted different women
So i do visit these sites now and then but i never forget to erase the
history file after that
It is sex and sex only.
Not that there is anything wrong with sex but it has nothing to do with art.

I think you're wrong about that. Either a man or a woman can understand
or feel erotica. Her paintings are not erotic and that is the idea of
pin up art. I think the problem with this woman is she ain't got no
soul. wink wink d.
Yeah, Gil Elvgren is great! Great legs as you have said. Also
a lot of nude stuff that you don't see too often.
Frank Frazetta has great erotic women too, although he is more
on the Fantasy side of things. Boris too, but he isn't as incredible
as Frazetta.
I recently got a free copy of Olivia's version of Courtney Love,
which is pretty cool.
What do you think of my nudes?

Nieman and Kincade hands down. I liked Peter Max. maybe it's just my age. d.
Thanks for the reply. [By the way, I tried to reply to your post
directly, but got an error message from Google Groups of the "Unable
to retrieve message" type - don't know if this is my problem or
Google's.]
1. I checked out the official Frazetta site. Truthfully, it's a
little too... intense for my tastes. I don't mind the sword and
sorcery genre, but this was just a little dark for me.
2. I first saw Olivia's version of Courtney Love by driving by a
bench ad, but even seen at 35 mph, it still looked great!
3. I checked out your website. My favorite of the nudes was the full
color beach painting. I have (and am probably not alone in this) my
own little private "island fantasy", and I found this painting quite
evocative of it.

probably mani.
Dilettante
I would have to say Rolf Armstrong. I see it like
this: what is "sexy" changes from genaration to
generation, sometimes year to year. Probably
not too many men think the Gibson girls are
very sexy, for instance. So, there is no point
in trying to answer your question by taking the
approach of "What pin-up artist of 2004 would
most men agrees draws the sexiest women?"
Doing that, you get into fads and not much
more. As a result, I look at the over all
quality of the work: the basic picture design,
the uses of color, etc. And when I do that,
I come up with Rolf Armstrong as being the
best pin-up artist, although others, such as
Fritz Willis make pretty close seconds.
"Olivia" is way down the list, talented, but
not really original. She does a good job
promoting her work, but I would guess that
there are fifty, if not one-hundred, equally
talented pin-up artists around today, though
they are far less effective at promoting their
work. "Olivia" does not even come close
to being in the same league with Rolf
Armstrong and Fritz Willis.

My view on this (and on other types of illustration)
is that when it is good enough, it becomes art.
Some people want to maintain that every fourth
rate abstrationist atrocity is "art," while an
Armstrong pin-up or a Mucha chocolate ad or
Bernie Krigstein comic book story is not, but I
simply disagree. Neither pin-up art nor abstract
painting is automatically art, but both can become
art when done by a genuine artist. (The basic
question is continually debated in rec.arts.fine
anyway, and probably will be as long as the
group is around.)

Thanks for your reply.
I took a closer look at the two pinup artists you recommended (mostly
at "the pinup files" website):
- Rolf Armstrong: Very nice. I was immediately struck by his use of
light and shadow, more so than most other pinup artists of his time.
I also found it interesting that he seemed to use the same model over
and over (at least, the face of many of the sample works at "the pinup
files" seemed to be the same).
- Fritz Willis: While in some respects I liked Armstrong's technique
better, overall I think I like Willis more. Though some of his work
seemed "sketchy", I REALLY liked his compositions and choice of
subjects.
- Comparison to Olivia: I agree that both artists can probably be
ranked higher than "Olivia", whose work tends to be somewhat more a
"graphic arts" representation (if that's the proper term; I mean, it
tends to look a little more "cartoon-y"). Still, she's pretty good.
Anyway, they all get the "art" classification from me!
Thanks again,
