Hello all. Specifically, what is a good digital camera for oil
paintings of dimensions ranging from 18 x 18 to 24 x 24 in?

I don't really need a specific brand or model (even though it'd be
helpful, too). I mainly need to know how many megapixels should suffice
to give a close depiction of an oil on canvas work. I also notice
digital cameras come with all sort of features, most which I do not understand,
which may be relevant.

Also,
I notice there are services that turn digital image to slides. I wonder
how many mega-pixels does it take turn out a good slide (i.e. comparable
to the quality of a real slide from the perspective of an arts
department faculty scrutinizing portfolios of scores of MFA applicants)?

Your input has been preemptively appreciated.

I am quite new to this forum, and this question may have already been
discussed, if so, sorry!

I've been told that, I need a digital camera with 5 or more
megapixals, to take pictures, good enough, to convert to slides, for
competion submission.

A simple answer:

Buy the camera brand that offers the most resolution
for the money you have to spend. The higher the
resolution, the higher the camera's cost usually.

The higher
resolution is especially important if you're
planning to make prints (or slides) rather than
simply using the camera to make presentations
for a computer monitor.

Resolution requirements are holy war material. More important than
the pixel resolution is the lens quality, but you generally only get
excellent glass on higher-resolution cameras. Good glass is what
gives you sharpness and clarity, particularly in the corners. Best
bet is a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses, but that's a bit of
an investment.

Next question is what you're going to do with the image. For making
smaller enlargements, anything over 4 MPixels should be fine. For
making large enlargements or projecting an image, you'd want to go
with 6+ MP. 35mm negative resolution is generally figured at 12+ MP,
but most films won't really resolve that.

If you don't want to make the investment in $2-3k worth of gear, you
might consider hiring a pro to do it for you. OTOH, the equipment
will continue to be useful to you, once you're past the learning
curve.

In general, anything over 6 MP is getting hard to differentiate from
film by anyone but photography experts.

A better place to ask such questions is rec.photo.digital, but it's
very high volume. A search of the archives on google groups will give
you more info than you could ever read.
