Hi all..

I'm hoping to enroll on a part time foundation art course. I live in the
North East of England (Durham) and really don't know how good the local
courses are. Are foundation courses really much-of-a-muchness or would it
be worth choosing one institution over another (perhaps i'm just coming
from the background of academic snobbery).

Would I typically be asked to present a portfolio of my work or would my
GCSE (A) suffice to get me in?

Many thanks,

Stephen

yes, you'll be asked to present a portfolio of work, you'll have to
show you've got some kind of commitment to producing work beyond that
of doing a gcse
don't know about where you can apply, when i did mine i had to stay
within my cachement area, whch was south wales, so i had a choice of
three, cardiff, newport or swansea.
you'll have to find out if that's still the case.

Depending what sort of portfolio you have, you might get straight into
a BA. It would need to contain accomplished life drawing and proof
that you have explored all types of medium. Foundation courses are
good to help you decide what sort of work you want to focus on at
degree level. I would recommend University of Northumbria. I'm not
sure if Newcastle University do a foundation but their BA is first
class. There is also Sunderland, which has a growing reputation.

Good luck
