Can anyone provide information about a New Zealand artist named Eric
N. Gully who was active in the 1930s? He did watercolor landscapes.
Thanks,

G'day. We studied Gully in art history in high school ( I grew up in
Christchurch) but unfortunately I can't remember much other than I think
he might have been one of the "New Zealand Company" painters that were
shipped down to NZ to paint the amazing rugged and fertile land of the
'new colony' in efforts to get poms to move there. One of the primary
things that trademarked the style was their concentration on depicting the
"harsh light " of NZ as opposed to the subdued English constableish
landscapes. I think Gully painted a lot of the west coast of the South
Island- rough bush and river scenes of tree ferns & such and -sketchy
here- also did some goache too mixed in . Hope that helps some, like I say
this is all from memory but it's free! Cheers, Devin

The Gully you refer to was "John", circa late 19thC - I think he died
1888 - other Gully (1930s)?????
