This original, one of a kind, there's nothing like it argument for
your paintings is not really a strong selling point. After all there's
nothing like bubonic plague either. It's unique. it's like nothing
else, it stands alone and has no competition. But it's not something I
would pay money for, nor would I accept it as a gift. And surely you
can come up with a more appealing title than Molting Season. Back to
the drawing board Missy and show us some talent this time. I don't see
any so far.

LoL...Apparently he learned art and art criticism at the same college
he gained his mastery of finance, political history, art history, and
religious studies, examples of which he has also graciously provided us
over the last few weeks. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to remember the
name of the college (if it exists); or perhaps they have a gag order on
him to prevent his name theirs being associated :)

Cheers;

Your photo is almost as big as the pic of the art, but I'm
not complaining. : x You seem to take a lot of pride in the fact that
this is "outsider" "folk" art. I'm curious to know why you decided to
go this route, as opposed to studying art formally. For example, the
phone book pages you've used on the painting will become yellow,
brittle, and flake off because they have a high acid content. Do you
care that someone will buy the painting (maybe) and have this happen?
I see that you got a degree in English, so you don't have an utter
contempt for higher education, nor were you not able to afford it.
This is why most outsider artists are untaught, because they raise hogs
and have brain injuries, and can't get important art information. Sex
may sell, but in art it's better to be good. I wouldn't expect a
"midwest farm girl" to have to use da wiles to peddle paintings on ebay
anyway. Nor will your art sell because of your internet persona, or the
fact that you've used the internet since 1991. You're not Lennin, your
paintings won't sell because of who you are.

You have a dirty mouth lady. But that's your problem, and not
mine. People who resort to gutter language usually do it out of
frustration and despite the fact it lays bare their lack of
intelligence, common sense and a good vocabulary. Instead of exchanging
ideas you essentially admit you have nothing to contribute and declare
intellectual bankruptcy.
You said sarcastically, I believe, that I must be a fine artist to
offer the sort of criticism I expressed. No I'm not. I have a
serious interest in art but I never confuse that interest with talent.
A confusion that infects the art world like - yes, Bubonic plague.
Sorry. Interest, enthusiasm and emotion are NOT talent.
In a world that values self esteem above truth, honesty and
straight talking, my criticsm may have seemed harsh. It's politically
incorrect these dumbed down days to tell the truth if some one's
self esteem is threatened. But you asked for feedback and I gave it
honestly. What you really wanted, I suspect, was POSITIVE feedback,
approval, and gee-whiz admiration, leading to a sale.
Sorry Chris. Your stuff can be surpassed by many MANY others who
don't brag about their lack of formal art training but who have done
the work, paid their dues and learned the basics. You need to learn
those basics Chris and stop trying to get by on your emotions, your
looks and your enthusiasm for something you're ill equipped to
handle. And stop trying to suggest that being an untrained outsider
gives you an advantage over trained and talented people. It
doesn't. Not in brain surgery. And not in art either.

Have a nice day. Bill.

Interesting to read all the bitching and moaning (gee, on usenet!) in
this thread and to see that the painting sold for $175. That's pretty
good for eBay and for it being your first attempt (if that's correct).

The painting looked fine to me. Not something I'd buy, personally, but
not because there's a problem with it. I just have different tastes,
well, that and that I'm not likely to buy others' paintings on eBay for
$175 at the moment ;-)
