Water Colour Pencils

Hi. I was wondering if there was anyone out there who is or has
used those water colour pencils, in which you first draw a picture
and then brush water over with a brush. If so, what are they like and
are they worth it. Thanx.

I might start, since an artist I know showed me her technique.. She
surprised me by dipping the pencil tip in water, then drawing with them
while the tip was wet.. Very interesting effects.. And more controllable
than brushing water on afterwards..

Yes, I think they can be pretty useful. I've used them in botanical
watercolors where I need a tight burst of color. It works to either draw
the line on dry paper and blend it a little with a wet brush. Or make a
clear wet line with a brush and draw into with the pencil.
You might also want to try water-soluble graphite pencils, Aquarelle, is
one manufacturer. They come in different degrees of hardness 2b, 3b, etc.
They're really fun to sketch with and then go back into the sketch do
some washes using the pencil line you've drawn.

HI Merissa --
I use these pencils sometimes. I think that if you have the idea that you
draw a picture and then brush water over it, you are going to limit yourself.
THey are like any other tool -- you can do all sorts of things. I find them
useful when travelling. THey are also very useful when I want to get some
sort of line effect in watercolor -- hard to do with a brush. YOu can also
wet the paper first, and draw into it with the pencils. This gives a very
different effect that the pencil-then-water approach. There's also watercolor
crayons that I like a lot. The ones I have are made by Caran d'Ache. The
colors are very strong and bright, and have a visual thickness to them that is
quite different from pan or tube watercolors. In general the pencils and
crayons leave some trace of line effects, even after you wash over them with
water. This can be a useful way to add texture to areas.
I'd say get them. An artist can never have too many toys to play with, right?

I've used them for years. You can get some really nice effects, not
quite like watercolor, not quite like colored pencil. I highly recommend
them -- they're relatively inexpensive so go for it, and enjoy!
