Since 1932, The Craft Students League (CSL) has been offering
outstanding programs in fine art and craft to women and men. Our
instructors are artists with excellent training, teaching skills and
professional backgrounds. The Craft Students League offers a wide
spectrum of workshops and classes Drawing and Painting. Learn basic
techniques, develop skills or master a craft in our spacious, well-
equipped studios.

Basic Drawing in 3 Dimensions
Learn to simplify complex objects into basic forms, indicate depth and
render using light and shade. Finally, bring your newfound
understanding to drawing the figure. Bring basic drawing supplies to
the first class.

Fluid Gestures: The Figure in Ink
Learn to capture the essence of a live model with pen and ink. From
quick fluid studies to longer poses, experiment with a variety of

Exploring Watercolor
Explore the basics of watercolor painting! While working from life and
photos, learn how to achieve a perfect wash, mix fresh vibrant color,
and other advanced techniques and approaches. More experienced
students work at their own pace with one-on-one instruction and

Painting Methods of the Impressionists: Paint like Monet, Renoir, etc.
In this four week course, students will be introduced to impressionist
painting techniques. Students should come with copies of their
favorite Impressionist landscape paintings, as well as photographs of
real landscapes that they would like to interpret in the Impressionist
style. Students supply their own oil or acrylic paints, at least two
16” x 20” canvas board or prepared canvases. Some painting
experience in oils or acrylics required.

Post-Impressionism: Paint like Van Gogh, Gaugin, etc
This four session course will introduce the painting methods of
selected Post-Impressionists. Students should come with copies of
their favorite Post-Impressionist paintings, as well as photographs of
landscapes that they would like to interpret in the Post-Impressionist
styles, including pointillism. Students supply their own oil or
acrylic paints, at least two 16” x 20” canvas board or
prepared canvases. Some painting experience required.

Painting with Encaustic
Learn the traditional techniques and contemporary possibilities of
this versatile, heat-based, wax painting process. Explore painted
applications, fusing, inlays, etching and carving and experiment with
collaged elements and mono printing with wax. Materials fee: $35

Fresco on Paper
Discover this ancient form of wall painting adapted as a viable medium
for the contemporary paper artist. Learn the craft of mixing the final
coat of plaster (intonaco) and apply it to the paper, as well as
painting in the authentic fresco technique. Use traditional colors,
contemporary lime-proof pigments and color concentrates only recently
available. Some painting experience is desirable. Bring apron, paper
towel, soft brushes, rubber gloves and plastic cups to the first
