Janson, Hart, Gardner - all have editions which include Prehistoric through
Present. They are nice books when new, but, used books tend to have lots of
highlighted passages from students to sell them. They aren't very expensive
(new). If money is a real problem, I'm sure your mother will love the used
one anyway.

Try "Architect's Digest: Special 100 year issue"

I was looking at it in Chapters yesterday and I think I will
actually buy it.

It is filled with art/design/architecture/style of the last
100 years and I loved the choices that the editors made.
(They could have included more paintings from the 1980's
& 1990's).

As I put it down, I thought this would be a wonderful
overview for a student in art history of the last 100 years.

And it is only $6.00 so maybe you could buy it in addition
to a hard cover book.

It would make a difference whether you want one that is mostly
a 'picture' book or one that is a true art history book.
Most of the art history books that are current are those
sold as text books and used in University level art history
courses. Maybe not what mom would enjoy. Get thee to a major
bookseller if thoust can and browse their racks. You can
also check out the Web sites of Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble,
Bookworld, etc.

In the textbook biz, Jansen and Hart are considered higher in "level"
than Gardner. More like real studying. Helen Gardner's still very
fine, however. So try that one?
