Extracts from "Michelangelo" by Giles Neret
Letter to Benedetto Varchi:
"The more painting resembles sculpture the better I like it,
and the more sculpture resembles painting the worse I like
it. Sculpture is the torch by which painting is illuminated,
the difference between them is the difference between the
sun and the moon."
He added in a treacherous aside that seems to have been
aimed at his rival Da Vinci: "if he who wrote that painting
was more noble than sculpture shows the same
understanding in other things as in that remark, my servant
girl could do better"

Eleswhere, referring to his painting: "this is not my profession,
I am wasting my time and all for nothing. May God help me!"

For the most part, quite a surprise when considering his
efforts at painting.
