I'm living in Milan and touring elsewhere in Italy on the weekends. I
have almost no knowledge of italian art history and would like to
educate myself so that i can appreciate the masterpieces around me with
some understanding, to put them in context. any recommendations on
books for italian art history that will start from the very beginning?

You might be better off with some general works that are classically
oriented: 'the Nude', by Kenneth Clark, 'the Story of Art', by E.H.
Gombrich. The Story of Art is an overview of western art history, the Nude
is less an introduction, but is still accessible, and is one of my
favorite books.

I've also read some of the small Penguin guides to art, I think there is
one on the Renaissance. I also like what I've seen of the books by Sister
Wendy, I thought she had some very insightful things to say about
Caravaggio.

What a wonderful opportunity.
