There is another on-line gallery, but this one is special. Please visit
the virtual gallery of Ralph Wells, artists from Portland, Oregon.

Born in 1959 in Portland, Oregon, Ralph Wells began working
professionally as an artist at the age of seventeen upon graduation from
high school, having been largely self-taught. A youth of prodigious
energy and a broad spectrum of interests aside from art, including music
and composition, film history, journalism, literature, sports and the
outdoors, Wells was determined to find an artistic style all his own
which could combine his varied tastes. He swiftly built a reputation for
often ambitious, carefully crafted pieces with minute attention to
detail, each taking many patient hours to complete. By the next three
years alone, he had sold over a hundred works and had had three one-man
exhibitions and was showing his pieces in galleries in Portland, Spokane
and on the Oregon Coast.

Having always maintained a parallel interest in music, which had
included twelve years of piano study from the age of five on and a
rapidly developing love of composition, Wells interrupted his art career
in 1980 to accept a music scholarship at Portland State University and
join the Scholars Program. There he began studying voice as a baritone
and within two years was singing leads in the school opera productions.
Honored as its outstanding student, he graduated in 1984 as
valedictorian of his class. That fall he made his professional debut and
began a successful career as a singer, working throughout the United
States and winning a scholarship to study in Europe. During these
productive years, Wells remained committed to his artwork, though
working usually only upon commission. But having the opportunity to show

his works in a prestigious gallery in Cologne, Germany, gave him renewed
energy and dedication to his art. Since then he has been extremely
active both at home and abroad,
continuing to expand the breadth of his subjects and the originality of
his work, often creating highly specialized commissions for his clients.

Mr. Wells employs a virtuosic and original technique in the traditional
art of pen and ink, often combined with an equally unique approach to
watercolor painting, producing works of an uncanny blend of detailed
realism and graphic modernism.

In his twenty-year career, Ralph Wells has tackled a broadly diverse
range of subjects, from portraiture to still life, landscape to
wildlife, all of which bear the mark of his individualistic approach,
even to sometimes mundane subjects. His pieces combine his love of
traditional forms with a desire to offer artwork unlike that of anyone
else's.
