Two of my favorite authors, Virginia Woolf and Wallace Stevens, are as much
artists of the image as of the word. The hypnotic pleasure I get from looking
at people and places and things, the music I listen to as I write (solo
instrumental and chamber, mostly) are as important to me as the books I read.

Visual art and artists were an integral part of the Harlem Renaissance, so
people like Romare Bearden, Palmer Hayden, Jacob Lawrence, Hale Woodruff were
friends of the family, and originals of their work were everywhere. As I came
into my own I made it a point to supplement this early exposure with regular
reading and visits to museums in Europe and the Americas with family and
friends.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to have written or lectured on Bearden and
Rodin, and would like to venture further into writing about Art, Architecture &
Design (catalog essays, exhibition reviews). Accordingly, my desktop database
features downloaded articles on art, artists, genres and institutions of all
kinds.

Like the Film, Gastronomy, Library and Music sections of my website, the Art
Gallery mirrors my desktop as a kind of online research database. As I explore
other websites for ideas and inspiration, I intend to add, day by day, little
by little, literally hundreds of links.

A technical note. Netscape 6.0 works fine with my site. Those of you using
Netscape 4.75 and below won't be able to access the dropdown
menus @ the gateway pages of the respective site sections. One way around this
is to copy and paste the appropriate url (e.g.,
http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/kbrown1960/homepage/), replacing
<<art-gallery.html>> with <<art-gallery-4.html>> or <<art-gallery-5.html>> and
so on. Same goes for Music, Gastronomy, Library or Film & Video. Also, the
vast majority of (non-graphics oriented) visitors to my site seem to use
800x600 screen resolution, so I designed accordingly. 1024x768 looks OK,
especially when viewing the Artworks in the Gallery. But I can't vouch for how
my site fares at ultra-high resolutions on 21-inch monitors.

Enjoy.
