Hello from Scotland, UK,

My wife is a pastel landscape artist. She uses a surface which she calls
sandboard. It looks and feels like sandpaper and grinds down expensive
pastels at an alarming rate. She has been using A3/4 sizes but would
like larger ones if possible. The local art shop say their supplier of
this has gone broke and stopped making it and she wonders if there are
any other suppliers of it anywhere.

Any ideas......

Thanks

Alistair

I have no idea what might be available in the UK
but there are numerous manufacturers of 'sanded
paper' as well as 'sanded illustration board'
available from USA art suppliers. Two that come
to mind with international sales are Strathmore
and Fabriano -- both should be available in UK.
Others are Wallis, Ersta, and Crescent off the top
of my head. Strathmore 500 'charcoal' paper is
also a favorite of pastel artists but I don't think
it is 'sanded' -- just has good tooth for pastels.
And there are many other charcoal papers or unsanded
papers that have excellent tooth for pastels.

Hi Milly,

Thanks for coming back to us. Since posting I have been browsing around
UK art materials sites and found this one :

http://www.heatoncooper.co.uk/page14.htm

which describes some pastel surfaces including Fabriano. Morag
recognises some of them but
is keen to try the others as well.
In addition it is about 100 miles away from us in a beautiful part of
the UK (The Lake District) where we went on honeymoon some years back
now. Sounds like a good excuse for an overnight trip away some weekend
to see what they have and maybe stock up.

She did try Clayboard Pastelboard from the USA last year but didn't get
on with it. She says herself that she did not know how to use it though.
The surface she uses looks to me ( a non-artist) like ordinary sandpaper
you would rub down old paintwork with before redecorating - but what
would I know about it :-)

Thanks again

Alistair

Hello Alison,

Thanks for the reply. We already have the Wheatsheaf catalogue and one
by Shilbrook but they don't appear to have the surface that Morag is
looking for. Neither does Cass-Arts who advertise in Artist and
Illustrator magazine and have an online store. Until now she has bought
it in a local art store where it was on the shelves as just a pile of
sandpaper sheets about A3 size - no markings or brand names, they just
called it pastelboard. They say they can now no longer get it as the
maker went bust.

Since we don't have any special name for it, this makes it a bit harder
to find a replacement source for it. However I will mail order some of
the surfaces mentioned on the heatoncooper page and see if any of them
are the same or close to what she needs. As far as I can tell from
looking at it, B&Q would be her best bet :-)

Thanks again

Alistair

Atlantis appears to have the sort of papers you are looking for,
Alistair. Their telephone number is 0171 377 8855 and Fax: 0171 377
8850.

Best, Alison.

Thanks again, Alison.

I have ordered a variety of surfaces from heatoncooper this afternoon
but take note of what you say. I will fax them this evening and see what
they have available.

Best regards

Alistair

Just to round off the story, the post brought a variety of surfaces
today. It looks like Rembrandt Sovereign Pastel card is what Morag was
looking for but she is excited by the half dozen other surfaces that she
has acquired and looks forward to trying them all out.

Thanks for all your help.

Alistair
