Does anyone know of a art supply company that does mail order.
The local art supply stores are terribly expensive. I'm looking for deals.

How about a web site suggestion? A site that sells discount art supplies.

I'm specifically looking for PrismaColor markers and paper supplies but I
also
want to keep my options open if I want to buy other stuff.

Thanks

You could try "Dick Blick". You could do a search and probably order a
catalogue online.

Allen -

The best place is Utrecht. They have stores in most cities and will mail
order. They have a truly awesome selection of supplies - paints, papers,
canvas, brushes, etc - you name it - at rock bottom prices. I've used them
for years and wouldn't go elsewhere.

They sell name brands and their own brand. Their own brand is of excellent
quality - and really inexpensive.

For mail order, I'd also recommend The Jerry's Catalog
(http://www.jerryscatalog.com) and Cheap Joes (http://www.cjas.com). I
think Jerry's has the largest selection of name brands and the lowest
prices (their web site guarantees it), but they don't always have
everything in stock, so sometimes you have to wait or simply get some of
your ordered cancelled. I've had a little better luck with Cheap Joes,
which also has good prices and a big selection, plus some of their own
products which I think are very good for the price.

I have a Daniel Smith horror story. You're right -- excellent prices and
products, but a lousy shipping policy.

I put together about a 1.200 dollar order -- the big ticket item was a mat
cutter. I called it in (this was pre computer days -- PC) and when they read
it back the shipping charge was around 200 dollars. I balked, asked why, and
they refered me to their catalog for their shipping policy. I put the order
on hold while I consulted. As it turned out, they charged a percentage of
subtotal for shipping, a policy. I called them back, and told them that the
trouble I had with that was that an 800 dollar mat cutter was shipped in the
manufacturer's carton, so DS didn't have to pack it, and the only real charge
involved was the 8 dollars to ups. They said sorry, policy is policy. I
said "I'll tell you what, I'll put the order through if you give me a
reasonable price for shipping the mat cutter. They declined. I said "I
can't believe that you would turn your nose at that" and they said 'sorry.'
That was my last dealings with Daniel Smith Co. I think it was 1984 -- in
more ways than one.
